As a Senior Research Agronomist (On-farm Research), you will be integral in mentoring teams, and providing extensive knowledge in agronomy and extension, undertaking rigorous and relevant field experiments to overcome soil, nutrient, weed, disease, insect and other agronomic constraints, developing and delivering extension programs.


The Opportunity

As our Senior Research Agronomist (On-farm Research), you will:

* Lead, develop and conduct RD&E projects that support Queensland's growers, agronomists and industry researchers with the data and information they need to develop innovative farming practices and systems that are profitable, productive and sustainable:
o Co-design and co-deliver innovative on-farm research that is both rigorous and relevant to the future challenges faced by Queensland growers, including setting up field trials.
o Develop and deliver theoretically informed extension to facilitate learning and improved decision making.
o Build and lead multidisciplinary project teams, including growers and agronomists, to deliver project outcomes.
* Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with regional grain growers, industry representatives and key research providers.
* Initiate and contribute to project planning and management; taking a lead role to set milestones, prepare budgets and manage project expenditure and research activities as required.
* Communicate effectively through a range of methods and negotiate effectively with staff, managers, clients and stakeholders.
* Evaluate outcomes and prepare project reports for departmental and funding body publications.
* Allocate resources efficiently, ensure timely delivery against competing demands, and handle human resource and operational issues within a dispersed multidisciplinary team.
* Support other Farming System Innovation team projects and activities and contribute to a Departmental culture of; people first, turning up in tough times, being agile and courageous, walk the talk, think globally act locally, in a safe and effective manner.


Technical Requirements Of The Position

* Extensive knowledge of farming systems in Queensland and challenges to profitability and sustainability for the future and apply it to design relevant and targeted RDE activities and projects.
* Extensive knowledge of, and experience in, field experimentation (small plot through to large commercial scale size).
* Project management skills with demonstrated ability to develop, manage, evaluate, and report on the impacts of a strategic research portfolio in a complex organisational environment with multiple stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and participate effectively in a multi-disciplinary RDE team.
* Demonstrated ability to initiate, conduct, manage, report, and publish the scientific outcomes of rigorous field-based research using experimental and on-farm research methods.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and empathy with farmers and agronomists.
* Ability and willingness to travel, including overnight, to service research sites in south-western Queensland.


What We Are Looking For (qualifications, Registrations, Experience)

* Bachelor degree or higher in Agricultural Science, Applied Science or Rural Science. Broadacre dryland crop research and extension experience is highly desirable.
* A current 'C' class drivers licence (preferably manual) and desirably hold a truck licence.
