The Ambassador Program

The Kin Community Ambassador Program seeks to empower individuals with lived experience of disability from ethnocultural and linguistically diverse (ELD) backgrounds to become disability ambassadors within their communities.

Through training, mentoring, and peer support, ambassadors will strengthen their expertise and confidence in disability information advocacy. As trusted community members, they will use this expertise to support individuals in their community facing cultural or language differences, helping them access services, understand their rights, and navigate available resources.

Being a Kin Ambassador is a volunteer position aimed for people who want to learn new skills, help people in their community and connect with likeminded peers.

Purpose of Ambassadors

Ambassadors will foster understanding and awareness across communities and service providers, bridging the gap between these communities and the resources available to them.

Together were ensuring that people with disability keep accessing supports to build their skills and connect with others who have shared similar experiences.

Who youll be working with:

As an ambassador, you will work closely with the Kin Ambassador Project Team, who will provide guidance and support. You will also have the opportunity to connect with a peer mentor for additional advice and encouragement.

The Role

What you can do as an ambassador: please note that all activities are optional and flexible to suit ambassadors availability and needs.

* Attend training and workshops to gain new skills and a deeper understanding of self-advocacy, public speaking, employment and sharing lived experiences.
* Engage with your community by sharing your lived experience, assisting others, and helping with referrals to services.
* Speak and participate in formal events to groups, organisations, workplaces and more. These opportunities will arise through your community engagements and with support from the Project Team.
* Participate in check-ins with the Project Team to receive ongoing support in your role.
* Contribute to Systemic Advocacy through submissions and focus groups with local organisations, helping to drive long-term change.
* Report community engagements to support project tracking and impact measurement.

Requirements

* Lived experience of disability, either personally or as a direct family member (parent or sibling)
* From an ethnocultural or linguistically diverse background.
* A strong desire to support people with disabilities in your community.
* A current National Police Clearance or be willing to obtain one. Kin will cover the associated costs if you do not already have one.

* Open-minded, respectful and inclusive of all cultures, religious backgrounds, and sexualities.

Honorariums

You may receive an honorarium for the following types of community engagement:

* Attending a co-design meeting
* Participating in formal, approved activities (e.g., presenting to groups, service providers, or organisations)

*All formal activities must be approved by the project team to claim honorarium.*

Time Required: Please note this volunteering opportunity is flexible and volunteers can join or be involved as much or as little as they would like and suits them.

There is opportunity to join:

* Monthly training sessions which can be online or in person these can range from 1-4 hours in length
* Monthly online catch ups with the Project Team and Ambassadors
* Mentoring calls from the Project Team or Peer Mentors
* Social activities
* Community Engagements
* Co-design workshops

Training

Monthly training is provided to ambassadors and is based on ambassador feedback and requests. In 2026 training will include: Public Speaking, Employability Skills, Lived Experience Work, Mental Health and more!
