Education

* Graduate of accredited Polysomnography program required
* Graduate of JRCRTE and AMA approved School of Respiratory Therapy preferred

Experience

* 3-5 years experience as a polysomnographic technician required.

Job Summary

* Performs limited clinical diagnostic procedures for patients with sleep related disorders. Administration of oxygen or positive airway pressure must be under the direct supervision of a registered polysomnographer. Other duties may include scoring, community education, marketing and inventory management.

Essential Functions

* Prepares for the arrival of the patient by setting up and preparing the equipment for the ordered test
* Interviews patient to determine sleep disorder issues and to explain testing procedures
* Performs testing and any additional testing required for sleep disorder that is noted
* Scores, interprets, and reports results of sleep studies
* Educates patients about test results, sleep disorders, community support groups, and available resources
* Prepares, calibrates, repairs, and maintains equipment required for testing
* Determines and reports needed repairs and replacements
* Maintains proper supplies to care for patients
* Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, laboratory staff, physicians, and other members of the hospital staff
* Monitors the patient throughout the night, observing cardiac rhythm and respiration of abnormalities

* Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision
* Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
