OPC drafts Bills and legislative instruments for the Commonwealth government.
This position will deliver comprehensive administrative and legal support to facilitate the effective functioning of the Legislative Program, drafting teams, and the office of the First Parliamentary Counsel (FPC). The position offers wide-ranging and essential responsibilities that are integral to the process of drafting Australian legislation.
The key duties of the position include:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing administrative support to the First Parliamentary Counsel (FPC), Second Parliamentary Counsels (2PCs), and Drafting team.
- Performing legal research and other legal related tasks for the Drafting team.
- Performing day-to-day tasks, including answering phones, managing multiple email inboxes, and undertaking appropriate record keeping processes.
- Managing legal data entry.
- Assisting with drafting projects, including preparing reports, presentations, and correspondence.
- Assisting with editing and revision of legal documents relevant to drafting.
- Coordinating, monitoring, and providing support for both internal and external training initiatives.
- Effectively utilising legal databases and library resources.
- Monitoring and liaison support in relation to the sunsetting of legislative instruments.
- Providing Federal Executive Council liaison support in relation to the legislative instrument program.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the role, you must:
- be an Australian Citizen; and
- be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) clearance to Negative Vetting 1 status.

We do this by drafting Bills for the Commonwealth government, and a significant proportion of Commonwealth legislative instruments. We also provide comprehensive, free access to Commonwealth legislation through the Federal Register of Legislation website, preparing compilations of Commonwealth legislation, and registering Commonwealth Acts and instruments on behalf of more than 70 agencies.
