A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the group of Prof. Toby Allen, in collaboration with Profs. Jamie Vandenberg (Victor Chang Institute, Sydney) and Eduardo Perozo (University of Chicago, USA), starting in early 2018 in the School of Science, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.
hERG potassium channels are of excellent pharmaceutical importance as they are the molecular targets for the vast majority of drugs that have the unwanted side-effect of causing drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. This work represents an international collaboration that is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia. The research associate will carry out computational studies using MD simulation, together with cryo-EM and other methods, to describe the structure, function and drug modulation of the hERG potassium channel. The postdoc will perform simulations using NAMD and CHARMM, working on the development of techniques for quantitative implementation of structural data and calculations related to drug binding.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in biophysics, physical chemistry, or physics (chemical, molecular or condensed matter), or a closely related field, having completed standard coursework in quantum and statistical mechanics. Experience in MD simulation of large chemical or biological systems is expected, with preference to those with a background in membrane ion channels. Experience in MD force field parameterisation for small molecules is desirable. The research associate is expected to be familiar with experimental structural and biophysical techniques, including cryo-EM. Supercomputing and cluster-based computing facilities will be used, requiring experience in the use of queuing systems, data management, programming, scripting and visualisation.
The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with the possibility of extension to 3 years, subject to performance and funding. Starting salary will be level A6 at AUD $82,143 plus retirement benefits (including 17% superannuation the total package will be $96,107/year) initially, with the possibility to increase to level A8.
