The Neilan Laboratory is located within the School of Environmental and Life Science (SELS) at the University of Newcastle. The Neilan Laboratory is a world leader in the molecular biology and biochemistry of toxic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and other microbes of environmental and biomedical significance.
SELS, located on the Callaghan Campus, is one of the largest schools in the University and encompasses a diverse range of science-based disciplines that achieved impressive ERA rankings in 2019, including Biological Sciences and Microbiology, which both achieved a maximum possible score of 5 ("well above world-standard"). These outstanding achievements provide excellent graduate outcomes and attract researchers and academics who are experts in their field.
**The Role**
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will contribute to and undertake research in the fields of Synthetic Biology and Microbial Genomics. The roles sit within a large centre of research excellence, funded by the Australian Research Council and provide a rare opportunity to work with leading scientists in the field to develop your research skills and enhance your research output, including publishing papers in international journals and participating in conferences and workshops.
This 2-year, fixed-term position is full time with the possibility of extension, and will be located at the Callaghan Campus (Awabakal and Worimi land).
**How will you become part of our community?**
You will have:
- Fundamental** **molecular biology/microbiology skills, including microbial culturing, PCR, DNA sequencing and cloning (biochemical and analytical chemistry skills are highly desirable)
- High-level problem-solving skills and an ability to utilise academic judgement to make decisions
- The ability to support the supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate students
- The drive and desire to establish a coherent research program within microbial genomics, with support from mentors and supervisors
- Solid relationship-building skills

The remuneration for this position is from $91,350 + 17% superannuation.
