Staff Software Engineer – Android
Overview
Our Software team are the brains behind Australia’s number one banking app, Netbank, StepPay, SurePay, Credit Cards journeys, Travel and Dining. We go beyond a passion for web and mobile development, creating reliable APIs at a unique scale in Australia.
Responsibilities
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll be responsible for leading, promoting continuous improvement, developing technical roadmaps, and improving the quality of technical solutions by implementing industry best practises. You’ll work closely with other technical leaders and product owners to document changes and drive initiatives. You will also provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, communicate effectively with squad members, and be involved in all aspects of delivery from solution design and development to production rollout.
Qualifications
* Possesses full‑cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing (unit, integration, system), release, and ongoing maintenance.
* Has the ability to work independently and drive a culture where quality, excellence and openness are championed.
* Is passionate about creating excellent modern mobile app experiences.
* Is constantly thinking outside the box and breaking boundaries to solve complex technical problems.
* Can utilise strong understanding of core business and technical strategies to deliver best business outcomes through technical implementation.
* Can mentor junior engineers and contribute both individually and as a team player.
* Understands how to drive to an outcome – how to get stuff shipped, tested, and well considered.
* Is enthusiastic about leading and championing strategic practice development.
* Works well in teams and has strong collaboration skills in driving continuous improvement initiatives.
* Is open‑minded to DevOps practices and demonstrates strong ownership mindset for product squads.

Tech Skills
* Strong hands‑on experience with Android, Kotlin, Coroutines and familiarity with Java, Jetpack Compose, MAD (Modern Android Development), ANR, Accessibility, memory management, performance optimisation and so on.
* Advanced experience in software design and architecture principles in mobile.
* Developing testable and observable systems – TDD, unit test, UI test and snapshot test.
* Monitoring app health, crashes and logs – AppD, AppCenter, AppDynamic, Splunk.
* Understanding of CI/CD pipeline – Teamcity, GitHub, GitHub Actions.
* Knowledge of public cloud along with various back‑end APIs and systems.
* Any experience with AI/ML, Agentic AI, Banking domain would be a plus.
