Job Overview
The Deputy General Counsel will provide high‑quality legal advice to internal stakeholders and lead the legal team within the Office of General Counsel (OGC). This role reports directly to the General Counsel and Director of Legal, Assurance and Governance and will ensure compliance and protect the University’s interests.
Location: North Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane.
Responsibilities
* Deliver strategic, commercial, and ethically sound legal counsel across diverse areas.
* Manage and develop a team of legal practitioners.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to produce proactive and adequate legal solutions aligned with the university’s priorities.
* Ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory obligations.
Qualifications & Experience
* Legal practitioner with a current unrestricted Australian Practicing Certificate.
* Experience as senior in‑house legal counsel within a not‑for‑profit or higher education environment.
* Demonstrated inclusive leadership, mission‑led approach, and ability to work within a large, complex, regulated organisation.
* Strong strategic, commercial, and analytical skills.
* Proven ability to navigate complex regulatory and legal issues.
