Job Title - Infrastructure Engineer Contract - 12 months with Extensions Location - Canberra Clearance - NV1 Overview We are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer / Systems Administrator to design, deploy, secure, and support complex ICT environments. The role requires strong Linux-first capability, automation expertise, and the ability to work within high‑assurance, segmented, and security‑focused networks. You will collaborate within a small multidisciplinary team and provide technical leadership, mentoring, and high‑quality documentation. Key Responsibilities Infrastructure Engineering & Administration Plan, deploy, configure, and support Linux-first (Ubuntu) and Windows-based infrastructure across physical, virtual, network, and storage layers. Ensure reliable data ingest and system interoperability across discrete or segmented networks. Provide technical direction to vendors and partners, ensuring alignment with security, architectural, and operational requirements. Design, implement, and optimise infrastructure solutions including virtualisation, networking, storage, and backups. Automation & Infrastructure-as-Code Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code using Ansible and Git/GitLab. Manage CI/CD pipelines, version control workflows, environments, and safe deployment practices. Mentor team members in automation-first approaches and secure operations. Operational Excellence Establish monitoring, logging, backup, and system lifecycle processes. Create and maintain documentation, diagrams, procedures, and configuration artefacts. Participate in change management, testing, integration, and performance assurance. Skills & Experience Mandatory Proven experience designing, configuring, and supporting Ubuntu-based infrastructure. Experience administering Windows Server environments (e.g., AD, ADFS, certificates). Demonstrated capability delivering complex infrastructure or cloud-hosted solutions. Hands-on experience with Ansible, Git/GitLab, and CI/CD workflows. Strong VMware vSphere/ESXi administration including lifecycle and performance optimisation. Networking experience with Cisco switches and firewalls, including segmentation, policy configuration, NAT/VPN, and secure connectivity. Highly Desirable Advanced Linux (Ubuntu/RHEL) administration, including developing SOEs and use of systems such as Landscape. Containerisation experience (Docker/Podman) and exposure to orchestration (Kubernetes/Nomad). Security tooling: Nessus/Nmap, AppArmor, Linux firewalling, SIEM/logging integrations. Monitoring/alerting design (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/OSSEC, CheckMK). Experience designing or managing high-throughput data ingest pipelines (e.g., Apache NiFi). Experience operating in highly secure or government environments with strict compliance requirements. Strong scripting skills in Bash and PowerShell.
