**Position Overview**
Provide administrative and technical advice to Council to enable it to fulfil its function under the SA Public Health
Act, Food Act, Local Government Act, Environmental Protection Act, Local Nuisance and Litter Act and
associated regulations and codes. Under direction from Senior Officers, review and help prepare
recommendations to Council on policy matters which will assist in the coordination of development and
environmental services within the area in an orderly and proper manner. To participate in the delivery of efficient
and effective customer service in which consistent and accurate advice is provided at a high standard.
**Key Responsibilities**
**Environmental Health**
- Responsible for the day-to-day administration of the relevant duties and legislation administered by the
business unit under the supervision of the Senior Officers.
- Carry out and complete inspections of food premises within the area (in accordance with the Australian
Food Safety Assessment System) to ensure compliance with the Food Act, the Food Standards Code(s) and
relevant Australian Standards.
with respect to the Public Health Act 2011 and regulations and delegated authority from Council.
- Investigating and respond expeditiously to correspondence from residents and ratepayers in respect to
complaints and enquires all matters relative to the administrative functions of the business unit.
- Under direction from Senior Officers, brief Council's Solicitors and prepare necessary documentation in
relation to court proceedings, appear in Court and give evidence on matters involving breaches of
legislation.
- Liaise with other functional areas and teams to provide and receive specialist advice on a range of issues
and projects.
- Assist as required with the Australian Government's Immunisation Program in conjunction with Council's
immunisation nursing staff, the Barossa Division of General Practice and participating schools including the
ordering and control of vaccines and the disposal of sharps.
**General**
- Participate in the operational activities of the Business Unit as directed by the Manager.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of systems and processes to enable the Business Unit to
achieve corporate objectives.
- Liaise with Officers employed by Council, relevant Government Departments and agencies as necessary.
- Provide information and advice as necessary to assist Council and the Business Unit relative to the public
health functions of Council.
- Provide advice on policy matters and contribute to their development.
- Prepare reports to the senior management team and/or Council as required in respect of those matters
arising from legislation administered by the Business Unit or any other matters deemed necessary.
- Represent Council on committees, seminars/workshops and in appeals as required.
