* Position Brief - Catchment Citizen Science Officer
The City of Gold Coast is seeking a motivated and experienced professional to join the catchment management team in the Environment, Heritage and Resilience department. This is your chance to combine science, collaboration, and environmental stewardship in a role that makes a real impact. This is a permanent full-time position.
About The Role
In this dynamic role of catchment citizen science officer, you will lead the delivery of key catchment and waterway rehabilitation projects, ecological studies, and catchment investigations. You'll collaborate with the catchment team in shaping the future of our waterways through the development of catchment action plans through co-design and using our water environment prioritisation tools.
This position will also facilitate and expand citizen science initiatives across the Gold Coast. You will have excellent communication skills to support our environmental partners that facilitate programs such as Platypus Watch, Seagrass Watch, and Dolphin Watch. You'll also manage and analyse citizen science monitoring results, together with catchment managements collected scientific data, to inform council strategies and drive improvements to the city's natural environment.
On occasions you will assist with waterway health monitoring, track emerging risks and opportunities, and help secure external funding through grants. If you're ready to make a real impact on our environment and our community, we look forward to hearing from you.
Duties for the role will include (but not limited to)
* Work in a team environment to develop and co-design catchment action plans using integrated catchment management
* Provide professional and technical advice on proposals, development applications, and restorative action plans with respect to waterway and catchment management
* Project manage restoration projects and scientific studies with environmental consultants to improve and protect river/creek banks, instream habitat and overall catchment health
* Facilitate and support existing citizen science programs in collaboration with environmental partners and community groups and identify opportunities for new citizen science programs
* Provide support to citizen science monitoring to ensure data integrity is compliant with council standards and can help inform priority actions
* Develop and maintain a strong network with community groups, other local councils, research organizations, and volunteers
* Work closely with internal catchment and conservation officers, as well as the Community Grants team to deliver community engagement activities, workshops, and events to promote environmental awareness
* Assist the Catchment Management operations to undertake water quality and biological monitoring activities.
We're Looking For People Who Have
* Relevant tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, including detailed knowledge/expertise in water resource and catchment management
* Knowledge of and/or demonstrated experience with Integrated Catchment Management, including sound understanding of issues impacting on water quality and overall catchment and waterway health
* Strong skills in community engagement and partnership development
* A passion for biodiversity conservation and waterway health
* Proven experience in facilitating citizen science programs, networking and collaborating with community groups and volunteers and developing environmental education
* Well-developed experience in ARC GIS mapping would be highly desirable.
