Where You Will Be Working
The Departments of Geriatric Medicine at both Gosford and Wyong Hospitals provide excellent training opportunities across all the core training settings as specified by the RACP Advance Training curriculum. These include Acute Inpatient Geriatric Medicine, Inpatient and Community Rehabilitation, Outpatient clinics, residential and community care. Both Gosford and Wyong are accredited for 2 years advanced training and the third year can be completed at the other facility in CCLHD or with non-core terms. We have established links with Older Persons Mental Health, Palliative Care and Neurology for non-core terms. Trainees are well supported for completing their projects by Geriatricians and the CCLHD Research Office.
Our department is small with approachable and friendly supervisors and mentors. CCLHD Geriatric Medicine is a national leader in development of a Delirium Service, Advance Care Planning and Integrated multi-disciplinary care for people with Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia. We have a full and varied formal education program with journal clubs, inter-disciplinary meetings and an active Quality Improvement program.
CCLHD Geriatric medicine terms are also accredited for training in General Medicine, Intensive Care and Rehabilitation. GP trainees are welcome, for non-core terms. CCLHD Geriatric Medicine may be able to offer flexible, part-time and job share positions.
Responsibilities
As a Geriatric Medicine Trainee you will:
- Provide acute inpatient geriatric medical care across multiple settings.
- Participate in outpatient clinics, community rehabilitation, residential and community care.
- Engage with interdisciplinary teams, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, nursing, pharmacy and allied health.
- Complete clinical projects under the supervision of experienced geriatricians and the CCLHD Research Office.
- Attend journal clubs, interdisciplinary meetings and contribute to our Quality Improvement program.
- Develop and deliver patient education materials and discharge plans.
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Australian and NZ Graduates/Competent Authority Pathway Candidates: Completion of 3 post graduate years or more as a medical officer in an acute hospital setting and practiced clinical medicine in an acute hospital setting for a minimum of 12 months out of the past 2 years.
- Standard Pathway Candidates: Completion of a minimum of 4 postgraduate years or more as a medical officer in an acute hospital setting and practiced clinical medicine in an acute hospital setting for a minimum of 12 months out of the past 2 years.
- Minimum of 6 months experience working as a Trainee or Unaccredited Trainee in Geriatrics Medicine or subspecialties of Medicine.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership and direction within a supervised complex clinical environment.
- Excellent clinical skills, judgement, and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Strong time‑management, problem‑solving, communication and computer skills (minimum 30 words per minute).
- Evidence of continuing career development and commitment to self‑education.
