About the OPPORTUNITY
We have an exciting opportunity a Software Engineers to join our Integrated Defence & Autonomous Systems business unit. We are flexible with locations, although Melbourne is the preferred location for these roles.
We embrace flexible work arrangements at BAE Systems Australia, such as working a 9-day fortnight and Hybrid working.
Reporting to the Systems Architect, you will undertake all assigned Software Engineering activities, including related documentation, in accordance with identified project directives and standards, and commensurate with the lifecycle stage of the project.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform software engineering tasks in accordance with the relevant software engineering plans, and identify opportunities for improvement of those plans
- Provide input and offer recommendations for improvement of Company processes and procedures
- Provide regular status information to relevant supervisors, as required
- Where applicable, provide guidance, mentoring and/or leadership to junior software engineers in their activities
- Interface with other teams on the project ensuring that the broader project team's needs are taken into account
About YOU
- Software Engineering, or technology engineering degree qualified
- Strong understanding of product development lifecycle, and experience in at least two major lifecycle phases (i.e. requirements analysis, architectural design, modelling, integration, acceptance testing), in an acquisition or sustainment context
- Familiarity with multiple development lifecycle models (e.g. agile, waterfall, spiral), with practical experience in at least one and an understanding of their trade-offs in R&D; contexts
- Proficiency in embedded software development, including real-time systems and low-level programming for sensor integration and control loops
- Competence in software design and implementation, using relevant programming languages such as C, C++, Python, MATLAB, and Simulink
- Experience with operating systems including Linux, Buildroot, and Windows, especially in embedded and cross-compilation environments
- Experience with Configuration and Change Management tools and principles, ensuring traceability and version control in complex systems
- Experience with hardware-software interfacing, including working with protocols like SPI, I2C, CAN, or Ethernet
- Understanding of safety, reliability, and performance constraints in autonomous and control systems, especially in defence or mission-critical applications
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong ability in defect analysis and rectification
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team environment and independently
- Ability to partner with and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to obtain the necessary outcomes
- Defence security clearance or eligibility to obtain
- Eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic In Arms (ITAR) regulations
