Position Summary:
The Machine Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery and equipment used in the processing, loading, and unloading of scrap metal materials in the yard. The role involves sorting, handling, and preparing scrap for recycling or shipment while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Operate machinery such as excavators, forklifts, loaders, shears, balers, and material handlers.
* Load and unload trucks, containers, and bins with scrap metal and other materials.
* Sort and process scrap metal according to type, grade, and company standards.
* Inspect and maintain equipment daily, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
* Follow all safety protocols, including PPE use and site procedures.
* Assist in weighing and recording scrap loads accurately.
* Keep the yard area clean, organized, and free of hazards.
* Work closely with the yard supervisor and team members to ensure smooth workflow.
* Adhere to environmental and recycling regulations.
* Perform general labour duties as required.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Previous experience operating machinery in a scrap, recycling, or construction environment preferred.
* Valid machinery operating tickets (e.g., forklift, excavator, front-end loader) desirable.
* Strong awareness of safety procedures and regulations.
* Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Physically fit and able to lift heavy materials.
* Basic record-keeping and attention to detail.
Work Conditions:
* Primarily outdoor work in an industrial environment.
* Exposure to noise, dust, and heavy machinery.
* Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
