About the role
We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join a dynamic program team delivering key agency objectives. In this role, you will design, implement, and provide operational support for database services infrastructure, contributing to meaningful outcomes within a high-profile reform program.
Key responsibilities
* Configure, monitor, and maintain SQL Server databases, including performance tuning, indexing, query optimisation, and troubleshooting.
* Implement access controls, encryption, and audit trails to ensure data security and compliance with legislation, including the Privacy Act 1988.
* Create and manage backup schedules, ensure reliable data recovery, and regularly test restore procedures.
* Write, debug, and optimise SQL (T-SQL) queries, using performance tuning and monitoring tools such as SQL Profiler.
* Analyse complex issues and clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
* Document processes and provide accurate specialist advice, guidance, and reporting.
* Develop and maintain key internal and external relationships to support program and agency objectives.
* Optional: Experience migrating on-premises databases to Azure, including cloud-native database solutions, management, scaling, and cost optimisation.
Highly desirable criteria
* Experience in a similar role such as Data Engineer, Data Analyst, or Developer.
* Hands-on experience with SQL database design, SSAS, SSIS.
* Technical expertise in data modelling, data mining, and segmentation techniques.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Power Platform, particularly Power BI.
* Experience with Power BI Cloud Services administration (user access, workspaces, publishing).
* Proficiency in programming languages and frameworks (e.g., C#, Python, R, SQL, BIML).
Desirable criteria
* Previous experience migrating databases to cloud platforms such as Azure.
* Additional certifications relevant to database administration or data analytics.
Skills and experience
* Strong numerical and analytical skills.
* Degree and/or relevant certifications in IT, Computer Science, Data Management, or related fields.
* Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
* Effective communication skills, with the ability to liaise across teams and stakeholders.

Understanding hardware, storage systems, and networking to optimize database performance and scalability. Implementing robust security measures, including access controls and encryption, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Ability to diagnose and resolve complex database issues efficiently.
* Language and Tool proficiency – Advanced knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL). Proficiency with various DBMS platforms such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and NoSQL databases. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for deploying and managing databases. Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automating routine tasks and managing configurations.
* Collaboration and Team Work – ability to work independently with limited guidance to create self-direction in uncertain and rapidly changing environments, displaying the characteristics of creativity and resilience.
