About the Branch

The Electoral Education section sits within the Communication Education and Engagement Branch at the AEC. The branch is a team of energetic, passionate and skilled professionals, responsible for ensuring all people are informed about the process of voting in federal elections and referendums and encouraging voters to participate. This includes consideration of people who experience barriers and may need additional support to equitably participate. This is achieved through the collective work of our sections, covering electoral education, strategic communication, campaigns, community engagement, Indigenous electoral participation, and design.

About the Section

The Electoral Education team are education experts who deliver innovative and high-quality programs that are inclusive, accessible and engaging. The section is responsible for the AEC's school and community education program including the highly regarded National Electoral Education Centre at Old Parliament House in Canberra; a digital 3D electoral game available to schools via an app; online education resources; and a teacher professional learning program.

The adult and community education program includes the Writs to Referendums exhibition at Old Parliament House; and a well-established community and adult education program with a particular focus on communities that may face barriers to electoral participation.

The Community and Adult Education team works in consultation with the Strategic Communication, Community Engagement and Design teams as well as the Indigenous Electoral Engagement Program within the branch to develop and deliver educational resources that build trust and participation in Australia's electoral system. This includes co-design with target audience groups, consultation with internal and external stakeholders, procurement and contract management, and program evaluation.

The Opportunity

The EL1 Assistant Director, Community and Adult Education, leads a small team responsible for delivering the AEC's community and adult education resources. These resources support education programs and sessions delivered by AEC staff and community organisations, aligned with identified needs and education objectives. The role will also be involved in supporting the delivery of electoral education resources for teachers and school-aged learners.

Key position responsibilities include managing the development of accessible and inclusive community education resources and modularised training packages for elections, by-elections and referendums, with a particular focus on those who may face barriers to participation.

In this role you will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and take a co-design approach to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of educational resources for the Australian community with the aim to support a positive education experience about Australia's electoral system and federal system of government.

You will contribute to the continual development, implementation and evaluation of AEC education programs ensuring inclusive, accessible and contemporary educational techniques are utilised. You will also assist in the design, implementation, review and evaluation of education materials and resources available for students, teachers and schools on the Australian electoral system.

The role also involves developing and maintaining relationships with Commonwealth, state and territory electoral management bodies, education professional associations, peak bodies and organisations, and participating in relevant advisory and working groups. You will be responsible for managing a small team, as well as contractors and vendors to deliver projects to meet education needs and requirements.

To excel you'll have:

* Strong leadership skills and demonstrated experience in community and adult education and the development of inclusive and accessible education resources.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and strategically with diverse stakeholder groups to build support to achieve outcomes.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple competing priorities with flexibility in the face of changing priorities and deadlines.
* Exceptional oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to prepare briefing documents and submissions and explain complex issues simply.
* Demonstrated high levels of personal integrity, accuracy and impartiality while achieving results within legislative and policy parameters.

Desirable

* Tertiary qualification in education, training or related field.
* Experience with the implementation of contemporary digital education, such as video casting, educational games, or virtual reality.
* Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain knowledge of:
* Australian electoral law and practice
* Commonwealth frameworks and strategies, including the Australian Government Multicultural Access and Equity Policy, Australia's Disability Strategy 2021-31 and the 'Engage!' youth strategy.
