2026 Internship – Law Clerk

Overview

Work as a clerk in the Secretariat for the NSW Law Reform Commission (LRC) and the NSW Sentencing Council (Council). The Secretariat is part of the Policy, Reform and Legislation Branch of the Department of Communities and Justice.

Location & Pay

Parramatta, with hybrid working options.

Clerk Grade 1/2. Salary $41.47 per hour plus casual loading ($75,728 – $82,329 pro‐rata) over the placement period.

What You'll Do

The internship is a paid four‐week (or equivalent) casual placement, typically starting between May and August 2026.

* Conduct legal research, including case law and statutory analysis.
* Write research and briefing notes on legal and policy issues.
* Contribute to the development of law reform proposals and recommendations.
* Assist with stakeholder engagement.

Interns will be acknowledged for contributions in any published papers.

What We're Looking For

Interns must be penultimate or final year students in a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree (or equivalent).

Successful Candidate Must Also Demonstrate The Following Criteria
* A strong academic record.
* Well‐developed legal research and writing skills.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* A demonstrated interest in law reform and policy development.
Checks and Clearances
* National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014.
* Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.
