Curtin University invites applications for the role of Senior Technical Officer, a key position designed to support the operational excellence of our Kalgoorlie Campus's technical facilities, supporting Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). This role offers the prospect to join a team dedicated to supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in the mining industry.
This is a Monday to Friday position — no weekends — with a flexible, agile work environment and a strong focus on work-life balance. You will have opportunities to grow, develop, and diversify your skills while supporting technical operations. If travel to Perth is required, you will receive an extra 15 hours (or 2 days) of annual leave each year.
About the Role:
As a Senior Technical Officer, you will focus on supporting Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering activities. You will provide technical support and associate services for teaching and/or research programs, and coordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratory and workshop areas. You will prepare materials and ensure laboratory facility resources are prepared in advance and well organised for teaching and research activities. You will supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students, including guidance on the design and development of experimental processes using relevant equipment, and will maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing, and repair. This is an active and engaging role where you will apply strong problem-solving skills. Relocation support will be considered for the right candidate if you are not currently located in Kalgoorlie.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Coordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratories, ensuring effective space allocation for classes and/or research projects.
- Ensure laboratory operations and users comply with national and state legislation, regulations, and University requirements.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Conduct safety inductions for staff and students and ensure health and safety criteria are followed.
- Prepare materials and ensure laboratory facilities are prepared in advance for teaching and/or research activities.
- Supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students in class, including guidance on experimental processes using relevant equipment.
- Develop and maintain secure work procedures for operations including safety, hazardous substances, equipment and workspaces.
- Maintain undergraduate laboratory class procedures and workbooks in collaboration with relevant academic staff.
- Maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing and repair.
- Monitor and initiate ordering of materials, consumables and equipment to maintain supplies.
- Coordinate Minor New Works to provide appropriate services required.
- Grant access and liaise with Security to allow students into restricted areas.
Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria:
- A relevant degree in Metallurgy, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field, or substantial experience in a senior technical or laboratory role.
- Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and operational requirements of a laboratory facility.
- Experience in the design, conduct, and setup of complex experiments/equipment and systems.
- Knowledge of and commitment to Occupational Safety and Health practices and regulations.
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to supervise others and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Solid communication skills to collaborate with stakeholders and instruct others in an educational setting.
- Solutions-focused mindset with resilience and creativity in problem-solving.
- Effective written communication to produce safety documents, correspondence, records, instructions and procedures that are transparent, accurate and concise.
Desirable:
- Experience in the higher education sector.
- Experience in ChemAlert or ChemWatch.
- First Aid certification and/or a forklift license.
