Join Victoria's Youth Justice Precinct at Malmsbury. Advocate for Aboriginal children and young people in custody, actively engaging their families and communities in case planning and support. Provide culturally responsive, practical support tailored to each young person, focusing on strengths, aspirations, and achievable goals for a non ‑ offending return to their community. This is an Aboriginal designated position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply. The opportunity The Department of Justice and Community Safety (Youth Justice) is responsible for the statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system in Victoria focussing on prevention, diversion, and early intervention as the most effective and fiscally responsible ways of reducing youth crime. As an area within the department, Youth Justice is committed to the demonstration of the departmental values at all times; serve the community, work together, act with integrity, respect other people and make it happen. Youth justice custodial centres accommodate young people aged 12-18 years who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court, and some 18–21 year olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial centre. Youth Justice Custodial Services aim to engage young people in change by addressing their offending behaviour and equipping them with the skills required for positive community participation, within a safe and secure environment. The Aboriginal Liaison Officer is responsible for engaging and actively working with Aboriginal children and young people in youth justice custody. The role provides culturally specific support and programs to the children and young people, family and community. This position will be based at the relevant precinct however will be expected to travel to all precincts when required. Ongoing, full-time position based at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct but working flexibly across other Youth Justice Custodial Precincts (Cherry Creek & Parkville) and Youth Justice Centres, where needed to respond to operational requirements. YJW2 role: $81,496 - $93,719 per year plus super. Focus on and advocate for the young Aboriginal children and young people in custody and engage and involve their family members and community in case work and planning. Provide individualised cultural and practical support for Aboriginal children and young people in custody through identifying their strengths, aspirations and obtainable goals for returning to a non-offending lifestyle in their community. Support the provision of cultural programs and education to Aboriginal children and young people. Identify risks that may contribute to re-offending and work with the Aboriginal child or young person and their care team to manage these risks. Provide secondary consultation to staff to assist them to appropriately respond to the needs of Aboriginal children and young people. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of evidence-based interventions for young Aboriginal children and young people and provide tailored assistance that may include mentoring, motivating, advocacy and skills development. Develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of relevant Elders, community and professional groups to maximise their input to service development and cultural programs. The Aboriginal Liaison Officer role requires participation on a weekly rotating standby/on-call roster. Demonstrate how the actions and outcomes of this role and work unit impact clients and the department's ability to deliver, or facilitate the delivery of, effective support and services. To be successful in this role you will have: A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it. A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Aboriginal Community. A current full driver's license is required as travel to other offices within the department may be required. You will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check, which you will need to maintain for the period of employment.
