Expression of Interest for Non-Executive Director
Pacific Dermatology Ltd is inviting expressions of interest from three prospective directors with the skills and interest to contribute at the governance level to achieving PDL’s vision to improve skin health in the Pacific by increasing the number of doctors with specialist level expertise in the prevention and management of skin disease.
The Board comprises seven independent directors and directors play a strategic and hands-on role, actively contributing to the organisation’s success. This is a voluntary, yet highly rewarding position that offers the opportunity to improve health outcomes in the Pacific.
About us
PDL is a small, not-for profit charity based in Australia that supports the dermatology training of Pacific-based doctors at the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre and Fiji National University in Fiji. Since our establishment in 2017, we have:
1. Supported the creation of a dermatology training centre at the PJ Twomey Hospital in Suva, Fiji.
2. Established a partnership with Fiji National University and created the accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology and Master of Medicine in Dermatology.
3. Supported delivery of dermatology training with teaching and supervision by Fiji-based and visiting international specialist doctors, as well as access to virtual training opportunities.
4. Supported the training of 11 Diploma of Dermatology students from Fiji, Kiribati, and Solomon Island; and 7 Master of Medicine in Dermatology students from Fiji, Solomon Island and Kiribati of which 3 have now graduated.
PDL was initially supported through philanthropic donations and, in 2024, entered into a four-year agreement with the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) to continue and expand the training and development work.
We are seeking
We are seeking to fill three positions on our Board, including the role of Company Secretary.
Individuals with skills and expertise in any of the following fields are encouraged to apply:
1. Business Acumen: Sound experience in financial management of stakeholder funds and performance reporting; experience in strategic planning, risk management, financial planning.
2. Company Secretarial Knowledge: Knowledge or experience, or the willingness to quickly acquire that knowledge.
3. Fundraising and Philanthropy: Experience in developing and executing strategic fundraising plans; ability to network for the purpose of engaging financial and in-kind support.
4. Knowledge of Medical Education and/or Health Sector Operations: Experience and understanding of specialty medical training and assessment in the health sector; broad understanding of the scope of Dermatology specialty education, with an interest in understanding Pacific skin health and health services.
5. Knowledge of Pacific Health Matters: Understanding Fijian and/or Pacific government health policies and processes; a broad understanding of how key stakeholders and funders function in Fiji and/or the Pacific.
All directors are expected to possess the full set of personal attributes and behavioural qualities required to operate as an effective director including:
1. Commitment to the vision, goals and values of the PDL and a passion for supporting in-country leadership to grow capacity locally.
2. Understanding of the governance requirements, especially for not-for-profit charities. AICD qualifications are preferred.
3. Leadership skills to appropriately represent the PDL, take responsibility for decisions and actions and allow the time required to make a genuine and active contribution to the Board.
4. Ability to listen and appropriately engage with other people’s viewpoints in a culturally sensitive way, as well as communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
5. Ability to negotiate outcomes and influence others, and support operational or fundraising initiatives including being willing to introduce their network to PDL to support its goals.
6. Ability to critically analyse complex issues, distil key issues, develop innovative solutions to problems including identifying risks and risk mitigation.
Our Board Directors
Our roles include:
1. Providing strategic oversight and governance to ensure PDL continues to further its mission to improve skin health in the Pacific by growing Pacific leadership.
2. Helping shape the long-term vision and direction of the organisation.
3. Overseeing financial performance, human resource management, risk management, and compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
4. Offering insights and leadership on key areas such as medical education and assessment, advocacy and engagement with government and non-government stakeholders in Pacific Island countries and Australia.
5. Acting as an ambassador for PDL, promoting our purpose and building partnerships across the Pacific and within the professional communities.
6. Fostering a positive and culturally sensitive environment for staff, volunteers and students.
Attendance at Board meetings generally via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, with the occasional face-to-face.
