Zoos Victoria (ZV) operates four landmark zoos, Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Kyabram Fauna Park (KFP). We are seeking a skilled and motivated Vet to join the team at KFP. Working predominantly Monday to Friday, with occasional work on public holidays/weekends, this is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced vet to join a committed team.
The primary role of this position is to assist in delivering appropriate standards for veterinary care with the Life Sciences Manager (LSM) and Vet Nurse. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical and management expertise in setting up and running the clinic eg building, equipment, supplies, staff, SOPs, coordinating with others as appropriate, in addition to daily operations and forward planning/prioritising services.
The key responsibilities for the role are:
* Providing preventative and curative health care to collection animals, endangered species programs, and sick or injured wildlife, including maintenance of medical records, nutrition and necropsy examination of deceased animals.
* To contribute to disease investigation and surveillance programs as well as develop and lead focused research initiatives.
* Work within the team through maintaining a progressive and collaborative professional work environment.
* To assist in educating, training and mentoring of other veterinary staff, zoo keepers, wildlife carers and veterinary students.
* To inspire conservation actions in our visitors through provision of engaging experiences.
The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, energetic, organised (time and priorities), problem solver as well as being able to work well under pressure. The ability to lead and motivate a team, whilst being a strong team member themselves, alongside excellent communication skills and experience with relevant administrative tasks will set them up for success.
The successful applicant will also have the following:
* Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
* Possess a comprehensive background with practical veterinary experience, including experience working in a zoo or wildlife facility.
* Proven ability to implement effective work practices to maximise the health care and welfare of animals and the safety and wellbeing of staff.
* Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (listening, verbal and written).
* Experience in mentoring and training staff and students.
* An ability to work effectively in a team and autonomously.
* An ability to engage successfully with customers/visitors and promote ZV's key messages.
* Experience in and/or an understanding of the principles and methods of scientific research.
* Physically able to cope with the requirements of the role.
* Current driver's licence.
* Hold, or be able to obtain, a current firearms license.
