Term: Full-time, Continuing (Contingent Funded)

This position is continuing (contingent funded). The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of 30 June 2028.

The School of Culture, History and Language is the focus of research and teaching in Asian and Pacific humanities, social sciences and languages and seeks to build excellence in understanding and capability in engaging with the Asia and Pacific region. The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.

The Position

The Research Fellow will be part of a team developing enriched language resources for the three Pacific creole languages – Tok Pisin (PNG), Solomon Pijin (Solomon Islands) and Bislama (Vanuatu) – to develop automatic language processing tools. In collaboration with Associate Professor Danielle Barth and Dr Bethwyn Evans of The Australian National University and Associate Professor Nick Thieberger of the University of Melbourne, the Research Fellow will work on developing and applying a code-switching annotation framework for the creole languages. They will also work in collaboration with members in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. As such, the role will be based at the University, with key periods spent working in-country. In addition, the research fellow will also be responsible for data and project management duties essential to the project's success.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise and/or interest in bilingualism, specifically code-switching, who has experience in the management of language corpora from collection, to annotation and archiving. Our ideal candidate is someone with experience in project management and who is keen to work as part of a diverse research team.
