About the Organisation
UMFC is a proudly independent, community-managed organisation supporting families and individuals across North East Victoria and the Southern Riverina of NSW.
Committed to social justice, inclusion, and trauma-informed care, we embed the Sanctuary Model to create safe and supportive environments for our staff and communities.
Through the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service (HRCLS), we provide accessible legal assistance to communities from Albury/Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Benalla through to surrounding shires and 10 LGAs across the Southern Riverina.
The Role
We are currently seeking a passionate and committed Civil Law Lawyer to deliver high-quality, place-based legal assistance to young people within our catchment area as part of the Invisible Hurdles program on a Part-time basis (0.80 EFT).
As our next Civil Law Lawyer, you will:
• Provide legal information, referrals, advice, and casework, which may include duty lawyering and court representation.
• Strengthen and maintain effective relationships working collaboratively with partner organisations to support clients’ legal and non-legal needs.
• Contribute to community engagement, legal education and professional development.
• Actively participate in sector networks, law reform, and advocacy to address systemic barriers and improve access to justice.
About You
You are a resilient, empathetic and adaptable lawyer (eligible for a practising certificate in Victoria) with a strong commitment to social justice.
Client-focused and trauma-informed, you are a positive role model who values teamwork, integrity and innovation, and you bring the ability to engage effectively with people experiencing complex needs.
You will bring:
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team and integrated service environment.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills and a commitment to building respectful partnerships.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to deliver community legal education.
• High-level organisational, problem-solving and time-management skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
• Solid computer literacy across MS Office and client management systems.
• Experience in civil law, family law and family violence
