Selection Criteria Applicants must have a Bachelor Degree of Physiotherapy and registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency (AHPRA). Demonstrated ability to assess children with a wide range of physical and intellectual disabilities and provide individualised physiotherapy programs for these children Demonstrated respect for and interest in children who have high support needs and their families Demonstrated effective communication skills, including effective written and verbal articulation of goals, intervention strategies, data collection and evaluation Demonstrated ability to work positively and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team Demonstrated ability to design, deliver or broker professional learning, preferably for teachers and other relevant professionals, in the area of physiotherapy. Role Whilst some individual treatment is necessary the physiotherapist¿s role at Waratah SDS is largely a consultative one. The physiotherapist is responsible for assessing students¿ physical needs, providing appropriate equipment and treatment strategies and working with parents, teachers and support staff to implement programs on a daily basis. While working in an educational setting, it is important that all physiotherapy programs compliment the child¿s educational goals. It is therefore essential to liaise regularly with the classroom teachers and ensure that physiotherapy goals can be incorporated into the child¿s daily routine (e.g. walking to and from the buses in the morning, sitting correctly during the morning circle, etc.) The physiotherapist may need to make regular appointment times with some individual students. However the objective of this position is for the therapist to be able to assess and review children as required and assist the teachers, parents and support staff with equipment, advice regarding seating, transfers and mobility, and the provision of exercises where appropriate. Creating programs that can be implemented by parents and all staff working with the student allows the program to be reinforced frequently by repetition and makes the program part of the daily routine for the student. Whilst the successful applicant would be the only Physiotherapist working at the school we will assist with links to support networks. There is also support from teaching and other therapy staff. Waratah SDS provides services for approximately 70 students with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities between the age of five and eighteen years. Many students have additional disabilities including sensory, physical, medical and communication disorders, and many also have an autism diagnosis. The school is located in purpose built facilities in Bellfield and also runs a satellite unit with at a mainstream primary school in Brunswick. Our school community encompasses a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Interpreters are used frequently to assist communication with families. The school provides support to parents in the form of morning teas, parent support groups and family social activities. A Welfare Officer also assists families to access other support services and to create stronger home school links.
