Overview Category: Level ESalary: $222,734 plus 17% superannuation plus clinical loadingPosition: Full-time, Continuing Clinical Academic roleLocation: Callaghan Campus/John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, NSWAbout the Role We are seeking a senior academic in Psychiatry to provide leadership in teaching, research, and clinical education within the Joint Medical Program (JMP), a collaborative initiative between the University of Newcastle, the University of New England, and the Hunter New England and Central Coast Local Health Districts.In this role, you will lead the development and delivery of Psychiatry education across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, while actively contributing to curriculum innovation and academic governance.
You will build and support a network of clinician educators, fostering connections with colleagues at the Central Coast Clinical School, the Department of Rural Health, and the University of New England.You will represent the discipline across School, College, University, and partner committees, and contribute to strategic initiatives that enhance the quality and impact of Psychiatry education and research.
You will collaborate with research programs at HMRI, CCRI, and Hunter New England Mental Health Services.The successful candidate will be offered a Clinical Academic appointment with Hunter New England Local Health District and will be based at the Hunter Clinical School, located at John Hunter Hospital.You will join a community of educators, researchers, and clinicians who are committed to improving health outcomes for regional communities and beyond.
The University offers a dynamic and inclusive workplace culture that values innovation, collaboration, and meaningful impact.About you To be successful in this role, you will bring:A doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing in Psychiatry or a related field, along with medical registration in NSW and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (or equivalent).
A strong track record of excellence in teaching, including clinical education, curriculum development, and educational leadership.Demonstrated research achievement, including high-quality publications, successful external funding, and national or international collaborations.Experience supervising MD, Masters, and Higher Degree by Research students, with a record of timely completions.Proven leadership in academic governance, mentoring of junior staff, and contributions to policy development and professional service.A commitment to equity, inclusion, and fostering a collaborative academic environment.Expertise in the following Fields of Research (FoR) is highly desirable: Psychiatry (including psychotherapy) Clinical sciences not elsewhere classified Rural clinical health Mental health servicesFor the full list of essential and desirable selection criteria, please review the Position Description.You thrive in collaborative settings and are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning and research environment.
