Summary:
As the Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you are a critical member and primary subject matter expert of the Engineering team. You will provide technical leadership across the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of secure cloud and on-premises infrastructure solutions, with a strong focus on Microsoft Azure and DevOps aligned practices. You will own technical concepts and solution viability, ensuring designs and implementations are scalable, sustainable, and aligned with industry best practice and cyber compliant with security frameworks with a focus on Essential 8 and Australian Defence Industry requirements.
Supporting the Engineering Lead, you will develop and uplift process frameworks, standards, and procedures that drive consistency across projects and operations. You will translate high-level objectives into clear technical work breakdown structures and provide technical guidance to build capability across the team while maintaining strong delivery management.
You will also act as the escalation point for complex, critical, or unresolved infrastructure issues, including those relating to cloud resource and infrastructure. This includes effective stakeholder liaison and a focus on improving support processes and service reliability through continual optimisation and practical end-to-end solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Design and deliver secure cloud infrastructure solutions that meet business requirements and operational objectives, ensuring scalability, high availability, resilience, and recoverability.
* Deploy and manage Azure infrastructure using DevOps-aligned automation and IaC (Terraform), maintaining consistent, repeatable, governed deployments.
* Configure, maintain, and optimise core cloud services (compute, storage & networking) to meet performance, reliability, and supportability standards.
* Provide technical leadership across solution design and delivery; uplift engineering frameworks, standards, and patterns (baseline designs, build standards, CI/CD, IaC).
* Monitor, tune, and optimise platform performance and cost, including capacity planning and cost control measures.
* Implement and maintain security controls aligned to Essential Eight, ISO 27001, NIST, ASD Secure Cloud Blueprint, and relevant ISM controls, supporting compliance obligations (including DISP expectations).
* Act as escalation point for complex cloud incidents, contributing to incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement; ensure effective business continuity, disaster recovery and backup practices.
* Maintain clear technical documentation (designs, configurations, change records, procedures) and mentor junior engineers to uplift team capability.
Skills and Experience
* Advanced Azure engineering capability, including Azure Landing Zones and multi-session Azure Virtual Desktop.
* Solid knowledge of Essential 8 framework and ISM Controls within ASD Blueprint for Secure Cloud.
* Strong DevOps and automation skills: Azure DevOps, CI/CD, and IaC (Terraform preferred; Ansible and ARM/Bicep desirable).
* Solid enterprise infrastructure foundations, including networking (subnetting, VPNs, load balancing), Microsoft enterprise services (M365 E3/E5), and scripting (PowerShell/Bash).
* Experience implementing and operating Veeam Data Cloud backup and recovery solutions (including Microsoft 365 and/or Azure workloads), covering backup policy design, retention/immutability, restore testing, and recovery runbooks to meet customer RPO/RTO requirements.
* Proven platform operations skills: monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and cost optimisation.
* Security engineering mindset with practical implementation of hardening, patching, access control, and logging/monitoring.
* Familiarity with containerisation/orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes)
* Must be an Australian citizen with ability to obtain and maintain an AGSVA NV-1 security clearance.
Qualifications:
* Tertiary qualification in IT/Computer Science, or equivalent demonstrated industry experience.
* (Desirable) Certification in Microsoft: AZ-104, AZ-500, SC-100, SC-200, SC-300, SC-400
* (desirable) Certification in AWS: Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional
