Substation Physical Designer
Job Summary
POWER Engineers is seeking a Substation Physical Designer for the Power Delivery Substation Department in Augusta, Maine. The role offers a hybrid work environment, requiring the candidate to live within commuting distance of the office.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a team to complete complex electrical utility substation designs, ensuring compliance with client standards.
- Perform detailed physical design of medium to extra high voltage substations, including:
- One-line diagrams
- Physical layouts
- Substation equipment selection
- General arrangement plans, sections, and elevations
- Control building design
- Cable and conduit plans
- Ground grid and lightning protection design
- Yard lighting design
- Material lists
- AC and DC system calculations and sizing
- Develop drawing packages in collaboration with engineers.
- Coordinate designs with disciplines such as Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil.
- Participate in quality assurance and control programs.
- Assist in project scheduling and budgeting.
Required Education/Experience
- Ability to work as a Substation Physical Designer in Augusta, Maine.
- Associate's degree or equivalent technical education.
- Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation; familiarity with both preferred.
- Understanding of electric utility substation design principles.
- Strong electrical and mechanical reasoning skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Desired Education/Experience
- Three or more years of experience in electric utility substation design.
- Familiarity with Raster Design and Bentley Descartes.
- Ability to produce drawings from sketches, notes, vendor drawings, etc.
- Material selection based on technical requirements.
