The Role
HDR is seeking an experienced Associate Electrical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services (BES) team in Melbourne. This is a discipline leadership role where you will act as the technical lead for electrical engineering across a range of projects. You'll lead delivery, maintain technical excellence, and guide a team of engineers, while remaining hands‐on in design. This role offers a clear pathway into broader design management and project leadership.
* Act as the technical lead and primary point of contact for the electrical discipline on assigned projects
* Lead the day‐to‐day delivery of electrical design, from concept through to construction
* Develop and deliver complex electrical engineering designs, maintaining active involvement in technical execution
* Take ownership of technical quality, ensuring all deliverables are accurate, coordinated, and compliant
* Undertake and oversee design calculations, system selection, and engineering analysis
* Support Group Leaders in broader team management activities, including recruitment input and strategic planning
* Identify, manage, and resolve design issues, risks, and variations throughout the project lifecycle
* Lead and coordinate the electrical discipline within multidisciplinary project teams
* Build and maintain strong client relationships as the electrical discipline lead
* Contribute to and support coordination across disciplines, with opportunity to grow into Design Manager / Project Management responsibilities
* Contribute to continuous improvement, technical standards, and best practices within the team
* Mentor and develop engineers, supporting technical capability uplift and career progression within the team
* Participate in site activities, inspections, and contractor coordination as required
* Participate in broader office and corporate activities as required
Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
* Chartership with Engineers Australia (CPEng)
* Typically, 12+ years' experience in electrical design within a consulting environment
* Consulting experience is essential
* Data Centre / Mission Critical project experience (highly desirable / preferred)
* Strong track record in leading electrical discipline delivery on complex projects
* Proven experience maintaining hands‐on technical involvement in design and delivery
* Strong understanding of relevant Australian codes, standards, and regulatory requirements including IEC, IEEE and TIA‐942
* Experience in coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
* Proven experience delivering building services (MEP) projects across all design stages
* Experience in client relationship management and stakeholder engagement
* Experience with project financials, resource planning, and delivery management
* Proficiency in software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Visio, ETAP, Vipcodia, PowerCad (or similar)
