About the Organisation

Southport Flexible School is a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition. There are 21 Flexible Schools throughout Australia who offer a full‑time and multiyear secondary education programme for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Enrolled young people may express a broad range of complex education and social needs and flexible schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices, including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness.

The purpose of a flexible school is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences supporting them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness.

About the Role

The Youth Worker supports, designs and develops engagement, wellbeing and social inclusion responses and programme activities for the school that directly enhance the engagement of the young people that attend the school. All programme activities complement the educational programmes on offer and support the engagement of young people's learning at the school. Some of these programmes include outdoor adventure‑based learning, sports and self‑reflection workshops.

Typical Duties of the Role include

* Supporting effective learning and teaching programmes for young people in both middle and senior phases of secondary education.
* Promoting and supporting the physical health and emotional wellbeing of the young people.
* Contributing to the development and implementation of the Flexible Learning Community's objectives and planning.
* Contributing to the maintenance of a supportive and inclusive school environment.
* Building relationships and collaborating with the school, staff, students and their families in relation to planning, actions and achieving outcomes.
* Supporting young people to engage with relevant external agencies through appropriate referral pathways and stakeholder meetings.

Key Responsibilities

* Knowledge and understanding of key issues for contemporary youth culture to identify potential barriers impacting on young people and their families in the wider community.
* Ability to identify barriers to young people engaging in activities and adapt programmes accordingly.
* Promoting the values and principles of the school to ensure inclusion, empowerment and youth development when developing and implementing programme activities.
* Commitment to work under the four principles of operation – Respect, Safe and Legal, Honesty and Participation – to establish a "common ground" to resolve conflict, negotiate learning, recognise rights, where responsibilities and consequences are modelled and explored.

About You

* Understanding of and commitment to the values of a Catholic educational system of schools in the Edmund Rice tradition.
* Able to demonstrate high‑level communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in a complex and layered organisational structure.
* Ability to diagnose problems, foresee potential issues and devise appropriate responses.
* Ability to lead, work in, and collaborate across teams with integrity and humility.
* Enthusiasm and excitement for working with disengaged youth.
* Minimal Certificate IV qualification in a youth or human services sector desirable, or the ability to obtain one within the first 12 months of employment.
* Previous experience in a youth or human services sector.
* Applicants must hold or have the ability to attain a current Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card No Start Blue Card system legislation.
* Ability to work within the four principles of Honest, Participation, Respect and Safe and Legal.
* Proficient computer literacy including the ability to learn various computer software systems and the ability to train and support other staff.
* Local travel is a requirement of this position; therefore it is required that the applicant hold a current "C" driver's licence.
