Position Description Swimming Instructor
Purpose
The Swimming Instructor position is a casual seasonal role that supports the delivery of
Swimming lessons at Marion Outdoor Pool. The role requires understanding and awareness
of all programs, activities and services. Effective visual and verbal communication is
essential, to ensure all participants receive the highest standard of teaching. To ensure
program retention and growth, teachers must build and maintain rapport with students and
parents. This position follows safe work practices and procedures and educates users of the
facility on how to be safe in and around the Marion Outdoor Pool.
Working with in the City Property Division of the City Development Department, you will
contribute to the strategic outcomes of City of Marion and be pivotal in delivering
exceptional customer service to our community.
Key Deliverables
* Teach water safety and swimming strokes to children and adults.
* Deliver a structured lesson plan for each lesson which extends across each term to
provide a high standard of teaching to ensure that program objectives are met.
* Interact and communicate effectively with children and parents to ensure that they
are aware of technique, skill level and progress.
* Increase awareness of other programs/activities/promotions that are organised at
the facility.
* Maintain order, control and ensure appropriate behaviour of class participants with
particular attention to safety and proper use of facilities.
* Maintain and develop relationships with the Centre's customers, particularly parents
and guardians of Swim School students, providing excellence in customer service.
* Communicate feedback from customers to the Aquatic Services Supervisor.
* Ensure all functions performed are environmentally sustainable and comply with the
City of Marion's environmental policies and direction.
* Participate in internal training and education programs.
* Maintain all essential qualifications for the position.
* Demonstrate and support the City of Marion's values when working with others and
the community.
* Ability to work in a team environment.
* Sound public relations and customer service skills.
* Excellent communication skills in dealing with clients/user groups.
* Sound ability to manage conflict situations effectively.

* Commitment to rostered swim teaching shifts over the course of each term.
* Commitment to arrive at the centre 10 minutes prior to the commencement of the
first class to collect necessary equipment and prepare for the lesson.
Person Specification
Essential criteria
* AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety
* Current Apply First Aid and CPR Certificate
Desirable criteria
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
* Experience in an aquatic environment including the supervision and teaching of
children and adults.
* Experience in operation of swimming lessons and student development.
* Experience in similar or other types of swimming programs.
* Knowledge of swimming safety, and planning and class management.
* Specialised knowledge in swimming instruction.
* A clear understanding of customer service principles and their application.
* Ability to maintain and control a group of children under their direct supervision.
* Ability to work in a team environment.
Standard Conditions
* Satisfactory completion of a National Police Clearance (will be arranged by the City of
Marion)
* Satisfactory completion of applicable Medical Assessment (will be arranged by the
City of Marion)
* Must be either an Australian resident or possess the legal right to work in Australia,
with the ability to provide documentation of a valid work visa.
* Comply with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and
apply "Think Safe Live Well" philosophy.
* Embrace ethical and moral behaviour and report any suspected instances of fraud
and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the
Code of Conduct.

Other conditions specific to the role
• This is a prescribed position as defined by the City of Marion Safe Environments for
Children and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Therefore, incumbent must:
o Promote and maintain a child safe environment and take relevant actions in
accordance with council's Safe Environments for Children and Vulnerable
Persons Policy and with legislative requirements under the Children and Young
People (Safety) Act 2017 and the Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016.
o Satisfactorily complete a DHS Working with Children (to be renewed every five
years), Aged Care Employment Sector Check and Vulnerable Person Check.
