* Full time, 2 years fixed term opportunity (with the possibility of extension). Located on the Darlington Campus at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME)
* Contribute to research in Spray Atomization and Combustion of e-fuels
* Base Salary, Academic Level A offering a base salary of $109,263 - $121,054 p.a. + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Aerospace Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) is one of Australia's leading research and teaching Engineering Schools, with degree programs in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aeronautical and Space Engineering. The school has a student body of over 1,000 students and has seen strong growth in demand for teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The school supports teaching and research activities across disciplines including aerospace, combustion, design, fluid mechanics, materials, mechanical, mechatronic and robotics engineering. The Clean Combustion Group at the University of Sydney has an international reputation in the field of turbulent combustion, combustion modelling and advanced laser diagnostics. Specific research issues include the combustion of bio-fuels, turbulence-chemistry interactions in flames ranging from fully premixed to stratified and non-premixed, auto-ignition of both gaseous and liquid fuels, spray atomisation, combustion safety in deflagrations, oxy-combustion and quenching of radicals on solid surfaces. Many of the burners developed by the group are now established as international benchmarks for the development and validation of numerical tools in combustion. Our computational codes are also used by various international research institutions.

Both experimental and numerical projects are conducted in parallel providing a platform for continuous development and validation. The combustion laboratory is one of a handful of laboratories around the world with advanced laser diagnostics capabilities such as high speed PIV and high speed LIF (10kHz) as well as standard PIV, LDV, PDA, Raman, Rayleigh and LIF. Computational capabilities include Large Eddy Simulations (LES), Probability Density Function (PDF) and Multiple Mapping Conditioning (MMC) approaches; as well as more standard RANS based methods.

The clean combustion group is currently inviting applications for a postdoctoral research associate to perform experiments that will resolve the complexities of spray atomization and combustion of e-fuel blends. The position is funded by the Australian Research Council and will be based in the School of AMME. The research aims to resolve challenges which include: i) resolution of the dynamics and evolution of the primary and secondary atomization zones with a view to optimize and control spray formation processes. The e-fuel blends will include miscible and immiscible mixtures of liquid power fuels and ii) develop an improved understanding of the turbulent combustion of these sprays through measurements that employ state of the art laser diagnostics.

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Spray Atomization and Combustion of E-Fuels to:

* work as a member of a team under the supervision of Prof. Assaad R. Masri & A/Professor Agisilaos Kourmatzis
* perform research in experimental combustion and laser diagnostics applied to spray combustion and/or turbulent flames
* develop capabilities that include multi-camera experiments for imaging laser induced fluorescence, backlit shadowgraphy, and/or particle imaging methods
* disseminate results at suitable venues (with a preference for international peer-reviewed journal articles) and prepare follow-up research projects.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Spray Atomization and Combustion of E-Fuels who has:

* a Ph.D. in Engineering or Science, or a related discipline
* a strong background in in experimental combustion, laser diagnostics applied to sprays or turbulence flames
* a solid understanding of turbulent flows, combustion, or advanced thermos-fluids
* practical experience with multi-camera experiments including laser induced fluorescence and/or backlit shadowgraphy and/or PIV
* practical experience in advanced experimental di.
