The Department is seeking to establish a pool of Senior Legal Officers to fill an immediate vacancy until June 2028 as well as future potential vacancies!

Provide trusted legal advice at the forefront of environmental and water regulation as a Senior Legal Officer with DWER.

The Senior Legal Officer provides high‑quality, timely legal advice on environmental, water and public sector law to support the statutory functions of the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the Environmental Protection Authority. The role works across complex and sensitive matters, ensuring advice is accurate, practical and aligned with legislative and policy frameworks.

This position engages closely with First Nations representatives, government agencies and external stakeholders, contributing to respectful, well‑informed decision‑making and strong working relationships. The Senior Legal Officer plays a key role in supporting sound environmental regulation outcomes through collaboration, expertise and trusted legal guidance.


Responsibilities

* Prepare and review complex legal documents, recommendations and briefs to ensure robust, lawful and defensible decision‑
* Provide legal input into legislative and regulatory amendments, policies, guidelines and templates to support effective environmental regulation.
* Support informed decision‑making by reviewing the exercise of statutory functions and administrative actions for legal soundness and compliance.
* Maintain contemporary legal expertise in environmental, administrative and public sector law, in line with professional and legislative requirements.
* Uphold high ethical standards and contribute to a collaborative, respectful legal practice aligned with public sector values.
