A Senior Project Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the project(s) and must be competent in managing key aspects such as safety, scope, schedule, finance, risk, quality, and resources to achieve the project’s objectives (aligned to the Global PM Framework). This scope includes time, budget, and requirements often set by our customer via a contract to deliver specific capabilities or services.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage projects in complex situations, with independence, and lead others.
Manage groups of dependent projects under the direction of a Program Manager/Director.
Have working knowledge of program and portfolio level tools and techniques.
Lead, supervise, and develop other project professionals.
Build an integrated project delivery team (including Project Management and Controls, Engineering, SHEQ, Commercial, Procurement, and Supply Chain) that work together to define, plan, monitor, and control the successful delivery of the project.
Manage customer interfaces and associated stakeholders, including identification and monitoring of project risks, planning, and response implementation.
Lead the project to deliver world-class performance through employee engagement, continuous improvement, and technological advancements.
Establish and maintain governance arrangements for project delivery, defining clear roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities.
Plan and monitor the project; submit regular monthly performance reports, indicating deviations, corrective actions, and issue escalation.
Support business development efforts.
Form and maintain effective relationships with project stakeholders.
Monitor programme baseline (cost, schedule, risk) and ensure ongoing compliance.
Coordinate activities and dependencies within the project and identify external dependencies.
Manage resources effectively and support professional development of team members.
Plan and control finances to drive performance.
Act as a point of escalation for project team members.
Manage third-party suppliers to achieve program outcomes.
Participate in communities of practice or forums.
Perform all duties in line with HII and client health, safety, environmental, and quality policies.
Promote and contribute to a safety culture aimed at no lost time injuries or environmental discharges.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, project management, or a related field.
Extensive project management experience, especially in a defence, submarines environment.
Strong understanding of submarine sustainment practices and defence frameworks.
Familiarity with program management frameworks.
Basic commercial and financial knowledge, including contractual terms.
Proven track record of managing large projects or programs with full financial accountability.
Proficiency with business tools such as Microsoft Office, SAP, IFS, or similar systems.
Experience managing complex projects and programmatic leadership.
Experience across different phases of project lifecycle and varying program types.
Knowledge of contracting methodologies and lifecycle requirements for supporting functions.
Eligibility for Australian Defence Security Clearance (Negative Vetting – NV1).
Willingness to travel interstate and overseas.
AIPM Membership (mandatory or willingness to attain within 12 months).
Desirable: Postgraduate qualification, professional body membership, APM Chartered Professional (ChPP).
