The Role

Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) represents the Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Mardudhunera, Yaburara and Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo peoples, the recognised Traditional Owners and Custodians of Murujuga. MAC is guided by the Murujuga Circle of Elders and governed by a Board of Directors representing each of the five groups. The role offers an opportunity to work closely with the Traditional Owners, Circle of Elders and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) to deliver the priorities and outcomes identified in the Murujuga Rock Art Strategy (MRAS) and Murujuga Rock Art Monitoring Program (MRAMP). This position offers training and learning opportunities for Aboriginal people. Under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position with preference given to people with a heritage connection to one of the five language groups of Murujuga (Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Yaburuara, Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo and Mardudhunera).

Responsibilities and Outline of Duties

Operations

Undertakes and supervises operations outlined in the MRAS and MRAMP in accordance with strategic objectives, fieldwork plans, budgeting requirements, prescriptions and other requirements.

Conduct air quality monitoring, rock art monitoring and other data collection activities that form part of the MRAMP.

Work in partnership with and under direction of the MRAS consultant team in the field and in the office.

Undertake fieldwork on Murujuga Land and Sea Country in delivery of the MRAMP.

Undertake fabrication, maintenance and installation of air quality monitors and related infrastructure, including painting, metal fabrication, equipment componentry, cleaning and maintenance.

Undertake maintenance of air quality monitors and related infrastructure, including damage reporting, repairs, replacement of parts, litter control and waste management.

Undertake monthly sample collection at air quality monitors and prepare samples for laboratory analysis, including assisting with developing and delivering the monthly sample collection program.

Assist with logistics for delivery of the MRAMP including helping to arrange vehicles and workboats needed to access the monitoring sites.

Undertake training and micro-credentials relevant to MRAS/MRAMP monitoring activities, which may include training at Curtin University or other institutions in Perth.

Undertake training to obtain operator certificates for equipment needed to manage the MRAS/MRAMP (such as off-road 4WD competency, forklift operator, or coxswain certificate).

Assist the broader Murujuga Heritage and Ranger Teams as required.

Cultural Heritage Management

Work and communicate with MAC 'Circle of Elders' and other Elders as directed by the MRAMP Project Coordinator and/or MAC Heritage Manager.

Gather and record Cultural knowledge from 'Circle of Elders' and/or other Elders as directed.

Safely record, process, map and store gathered Cultural knowledge and data.

Manage cultural processes and protocols.

Prepare and deliver training on applicable Cultural Heritage matters relevant to Murujuga.

Attend staff training with regard to Cultural safety aspects of Murujuga Land and Sea Country, and Murujuga National Park.

Administration Skills

Deliver on all required administrative and reporting functions both internally and externally by the various MRAMP stakeholders.

Process workplace documents and information relating to the Murujuga Ranger Team and 'Circle of Elders'.

Process applicable emails and electronic documents.

Data storage and management.

Workplace Health & Safety

Assisting with HSEQ requirements for safe delivery of the MRAMP, including safety training, participation in risk assessments, job hazard analysis, equipment inspections, record keeping and reporting.

Strive to achieve an incident free workplace.

Follow and carry out Workplace Health & Safety procedures in the workplace.

Ensure all incidents are recorded and addressed as soon as practicable.

Provide and apply basic first aid and respond to emergencies when necessary.

Deliver and maintain a safe workplace environment.

Learn how to provide and apply basic first aid and respond to emergencies when necessary.

Take part in Cultural Safety inductions.

Follow site specific industry requirements when working on industry leases to deliver the MRAS and MRAMP activities, including undertaking any site inductions required and wearing PPE specified by industry contacts.

Meetings / Gatherings

Attend 'Circle of Elders' gatherings as directed.

Communications & Community

Respond in a positive and appropriate manner to public enquiries and requests for information and assistance, in accordance with departmental protocols and policies.

Assist in the preparation and delivery of interpretative and educational material.

Participate in the implementation of community education and interpretative activities.

Promote the MRAS to relevant interested parties including media, schools, community, researchers, businesses and government.

Prepare for and attend community events and provide information about the MRAS as directed.

Assist in educating relevant parties in Cultural protocol, tradition, safety and protection of culturally significant places consistent with the Murujuga Cultural Management Plan.

Tools & Equipment Used

4WD vehicles, specialised air quality and rock art monitoring equipment, various power tools, various manual tools, digital camera, desktop computers, tablets, IT Applications, iPhone, printer/photocopier, projector and PA system.

Special Work Requirements

Culturally sensitive, aware and sensible.

Ability to travel when required for work purposes.

Have the ability to communicate effectively within a working team.

Willingness to represent the Murujuga Ranger Team in a community environment.

Selection Criteria

Under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position with preference given to MAC language group members and culturally initiated or approved MAC applicants.

Demonstrate a strong connection to Country and understand the cultural significance of Murujuga for the Traditional Owners.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, show initiative and to work unsupervised.

Be physically fit with the ability to work outside in extreme weather condition.

A Current Driver's Licence (C Class Manual minimum).

The following criteria will be assessed at some stage during the selection process:

Must be physically fit and able to perform 'On Country' work tasks and have the ability to pass a drug and alcohol screen and medical.

Workplace safety conscious individual.

Interest or experience in working on Country and ability to participate in manual activities related to environmental monitoring and cultural heritage management; including monitoring of air quality parameters, rock art colour change and other parameters relevant to the MRAMP.

Ability and willingness to be trained in environmental monitoring and cultural heritage management.

Demonstrated competence in written and oral communication skills, including the ability to participate in the delivery and development of interpretative and educational activities, and demonstrated proficiency in word processing, and the use of spreadsheets and database software.

Basic knowledge and respect of Murujuga Land & Sea Country and the ability to gain and keep the respect and loyalty of staff and the 'Old People'

Willingness to obtain Australian First Aid Certificate.

Public speaking experience and or ability to present to large groups and or willingness to do so.

Understanding of occupational, health and safety, equity and diversity principles and practices.

Demonstrated competence in the coordination and supervision of volunteers. (Desirable)

Willingness to obtain Recreational Skipper's Ticket and Coxswain Ticket.

Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) or willingness to obtain.
