Program: MEM40222 Certificate IV in Boating Services (ACP)
Agreement: ACP – Employer – Student Work-Based Training (WBT) Agreement
Position Purpose
To provide students undertaking the Certificate IV in Boating Services with supervised, structured workplace learning that develops practical skills in boat building, repair, restoration, and maintenance, consistent with their Training Plan and the requirements of the qualification.
Key Responsibilities
Students will:
Assist tradespeople in the construction, fit-out, and repair of fibreglass and composite vessels.
Gain exposure to a variety of boat building processes, including:
Hull preparation, sanding, fairing, and surface finishing (MEM25004, MEM25007).
Use of hand tools and power tools safely and effectively (MEM18001, MEM18002).
Operation of woodworking machinery (MEM04018).
Basic welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks (MEM05005, MEM05012, MEM05050).
Fibreglass/composite lay-up, trimming, and finishing.
Fit-out and assembly of boat components, systems, and hardware.
Apply workplace health and safety standards (MEM13015, MEM50002).
Record daily tasks and hours in the WBT Logbook as evidence of competency development.
Work as part of the production team, following instructions from supervisors and trainers.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the placement, students should be able to:
Demonstrate competency in core boat building tasks mapped to their training plan.
Understand how structural, mechanical, and electrical systems integrate in modern boat construction.
Apply sustainable work practices and maintain compliance with environmental and marina codes (MEM50003, MEM50004, MSMENV272).
Build employability skills, including teamwork, communication, time management, and problem solving.
Supervision & Support
Students will be supervised by a qualified Boat Builder (Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction, Certificate IV in Boating Services, or equivalent trade).
Supervisors will:
Provide induction, safety guidance, and ongoing coaching.
Sign off on logbooks verifying skills demonstrated and hours completed.
Support students in integrating learning outcomes into real-world tasks.
Placement Conditions
Hours: As per Training Plan (up to 560 hours across course duration).
Location: Haines Hunter Workshop, [insert site address].
Insurance: Covered under ACP's Practical Placement Agreement and WorkCover arrangements.
Remuneration: Work-Based Training is unpaid.
Paid employment arrangements are separate to this agreement.
Compliance & Obligations
This placement forms part of the student's accredited qualification and is subject to:
ACP's Training and Assessment Strategy (TAS) for MEM40222.
ASQA Standards for RTOs 2015 (Clauses 1.8, 1.13–1.16).
