Level: Consultant
Location: Sydney, Australia (flexible/hybrid)
As a Consultant at MIP, you're a hands‑on data and analytics professional who can own a workstream, work directly with clients, and help guide Associate Consultants. You'll deliver modern data and analytics solutions, data pipelines, models, dashboards and semantic layers, on platforms like Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake and our partner BI tools. You're expected to translate requirements into technical designs, deliver quality outcomes with limited supervision, and contribute to our delivery standards and reusable assets.
Key responsibilities
* Design and build data and analytics solutions under guidance from a Senior / Lead, including:
o Data integration and pipelines (SQL, dbt, Fabric, Snowflake, Databricks, Alteryx or similar).
o Analytics‑ready data models (dimensional/star schemas, semantic models, medallion patterns).
BI & visualisation solutions (Power BI, Tableau) including RLS, drill‑through and KPI layers.
* Own end‑to‑end delivery of a small‑to‑medium workstream (e.g. a subject area, set of dashboards, or pipeline) including design, build, test, documentation and handover.
* Proactively identify data quality issues or design gaps and propose options to resolve them.
* Support productionisation (deployments, monitoring, defect resolution) in line with MIP standards.
* Participate actively in client workshops, stand‑ups, demos and retros, not just as a note‑taker.
* Clarify and refine requirements with business stakeholders, turning them into user stories and tasks.
* Explain design decisions and trade‑offs in plain language to non‑technical stakeholders.
* Build trust with client counterparts through clear expectations, proactive status updates and "no surprises".
Ways of working, quality & governance
* Work within agreed delivery methods (Agile / Scrum / Kanban / hybrid) and help run ceremonies (stand‑ups, reviews, retros) for your workstream.
* Follow and contribute to MIP's development, testing and documentation standards.
* Ensure solutions are secure, performant and maintainable, and align to agreed architectures.
* Contribute to effort estimates for your own work and provide input into broader project estimates.
* Provide day‑to‑day guidance to Associates (pairing, code reviews, explaining requirements).
* Share knowledge with the team (internal show‑and‑tells, docs, accelerators, patterns).
* Flag delivery risks early and work with Seniors/Leads to address them.
* Demonstrate MIP's values and help maintain a healthy, inclusive team culture.
Skills & experience – must have
Technical
* 2–5 years' experience in data & analytics, BI or data engineering (consulting preferred but not essential).
* Strong practical SQL and experience with relational databases.
* Power BI and/or Tableau at a solid practitioner level, able to design, build, publish and iterate dashboards used by real stakeholders (incl. measures, RLS, drill‑through, usability).
* Alteryx experience building, scheduling and supporting workflows for ETL/ELT or analytics.
* At least one modern data platform / framework in production, for example:
o Microsoft Fabric
o Databricks
o Snowflake
o dbt (cloud or core with a cloud data warehouse behind it)
* Demonstrated experience delivering at least one of:
o Data pipelines / ETL / ELT in a production or near‑production environment;
o Analytics‑ready data models for reporting (e.g. star schemas, semantic models, curated gold tables).
* Can break down ambiguous requirements into concrete tasks and plan your own work.
* Strong written and verbal communication, able to switch between technical and business audiences.
Proven ability to work in a delivery team, manage priorities, and meet agreed deadlines.
* Comfortable working directly with customers, including constructively pushing back when something won't work.
Background
* Prior experience in a client‑facing role (consulting, vendor, or internal business partner) is highly regarded.
Nice to have
* Git‑based workflows and basic CI/CD (GitHub / Azure DevOps).
* Exposure to one or more of:
o Advanced analytics / ML,
o Graph databases and visualisation,
o Data observability / FinOps tooling.
* Experience mentoring juniors or leading a small workstream.
What you'll get in return:
Work with marquee Australian clients on modern stacks (Snowflake, Fabric, Databricks).
Real ownership with support from senior architects and practice leads.
Flexible hybrid work and a supportive culture.
