**About the Role**

You will be responsible for establishing next generation sequencing and supporting a diverse range of diagnostic microbiology in the Asia Pacific Centre for Animal Health (APCAH) laboratories in Veterinary Biosciences, Melbourne Veterinary School.

Supporting both diagnostic and research activities, you will also contribute to training students, staff, and graduate researchers. In addition, you will coordinate serological and microbiological diagnostic work while assisting in maintaining the laboratory's quality management system. Operating within a regulated framework, you will ensure high standards of quality assurance in compliance with SOPs, BC2/PC2 standards, and relevant regulatory guidelines.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Under the guidance of the APCAH leaders, this role is responsible for establishing protocols involving whole genome sequencing and metagenomics using platforms Oxford nanopore and Illumina technologies.
- Provide training to research staff, graduate researchers and students in the safe and effective operation of these instruments related to molecular microbiology and whole genome sequencing.
- Provide high-level expertise, advice, and assistance to users to undertake research projects using these instruments/workflows
- Contribute to the preparation of research proposals utilising next generation sequencing platforms
- Acquire and analyse complex data at a high-level for University research projects using these instruments/workflows
- Prepare research findings and diagnostic case reports for publication
- Develop strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and identify new funding opportunities
- Actively engage with key stakeholders to advance research and diagnostic programs overall

**Who We Are Looking For**

You will bring a strong background in biological sciences, microbiology, genomics, and diagnostic technology, paired with extensive hands-on experience in diagnostic research. With your deep understanding of modern laboratory techniques and protocols, you'll play a key role in maintaining an accredited laboratory environment.

You will also have:

- Detailed understanding of the requirements for regulatory bodies including DAWR (AQIS), TGA, NATA, APVMA and OGTR
- Proven ability to set up, monitor, maintain, as well as demonstrate and train others in the proper use of instruments/equipment/facilities and related methods for diagnostic microbiology
- Demonstrated experience in the development and validation of diagnostic assays
- Proven experience in molecular research techniques such as PCR, high resolution melt curve analysis and DNA sequencing
- Previous experience in whole genome sequence analysis, assembly and annotation of bacterial or viral organisms
