Clinical Nurse Consultant - After hours coordinator

Out of hours: 4.30pm - 11.00pm, then on call until 8.30am. This is a fully remote role.

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We are committed to a diverse, collaborative workforce working to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

Overview

Austin Health is the State-wide provider of liver transplant services for Victoria, Tasmania and parts of southern New South Wales. The Liver Transplant Unit provides surgical services for paediatric liver transplants performed at the Royal Children’s Hospital. The unit began transplant operations in 1988 and continues to grow in expertise.

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Registered Nurse to join our out-of-hours transplant coordination roster as a Liver Transplant Nursing Coordinator. This position supports the 24/7 operation of the liver transplant unit and provides time-critical expert care to facilitate this life-saving service for the Victorian community.

The after-hours roster is covered by multiple people. Each out-of-hours period will be paid as a short shift (4.30pm - 11.00pm), followed by on-call until handover the next day at 8.30am. Hours outside of 4.30pm - 11.00pm are remunerated as recall. The role is fully remote, with no requirement to work on-site.

The successful candidate will complete a comprehensive training program, working alongside a senior Liver Transplant Nursing Coordinator for 8–12 weeks. During this period, the candidate will initially undertake 16–24 hours per week (business hours Monday–Friday, 8.30am–5.00pm), progressing to weekend on-call cover and eventually shadowing short shifts overnight in preparation for solo coordination.

Responsibilities

- Support the 24/7 operation of the liver transplant unit by coordinating time-critical transplant care.
- Assist in arranging all components of transplant surgery from end-to-end, working independently and escalating to senior medical/surgical staff as required.
- Work with colleagues to manage logistics during out-of-hours periods and on-call shifts.
- Adhere to established protocols and procedures to make evidence-based, safe decisions in time-critical situations.

About you

We are seeking flexible, solution-focused candidates who remain calm under pressure, can support time-critical decision-making, and can coordinate transplant components end-to-end.

To be successful, you’ll bring:

- Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent with current AHPRA registration
- Post-Graduate qualification in a relevant area/specialty
- Experience in a relevant senior clinical role with demonstrated clinical acumen and decision-making
- Ability to negotiate and manage complex logistics and respond to changing circumstances
- Ability to make evidence-based and safe decisions using established protocols
- Highly developed communication skills to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Resilience and the ability to remain calm under pressure

Benefits

- Salary packaging options for greater take-home pay
- Wellbeing and health-related benefits, including wellness programs and discounted health services
- Onsite childcare at Austin Hospital, access to public transport and parking
- Mentoring and career development opportunities
