Aboriginal Inspection and Liaison Officer
Principal location – Sydney - Flexible working arrangements maybe negotiated.
Employment type – Temporary (up to 12 months) – Full time (35 hours)
Salary –Clerk Grade 7/8, Base Salary ($113,574 - $125,720, plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role
The Aboriginal Inspection and Liaison Officer supports independent oversight of custodial centres across NSW, with a focus on the conditions, treatment and outcomes for Aboriginal people in custody. This is a unique opportunity to contribute Aboriginal perspectives to inspections, influence systemic improvement, and work with communities, stakeholders and decision makers to improve custodial practices and outcomes.
What you'll do
As part of the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services, you will participate in inspections and liaison visits to adult and youth custodial centres, engage with Aboriginal people in custody and key stakeholders, and provide culturally informed advice, research support and reporting to improve custodial practices and outcomes.
You will also:
* Participate in the planning and conduct of inspections and liaison visits to custodial centres across NSW.
* Engage with Aboriginal people in custody to understand their experiences, treatment and access to services.
* Build and maintain effective relationships with NSW Government agencies, service providers and external stakeholders.
* Provide culturally relevant advice to support the development of inspection standards, methodologies, policies and practices.
* Assist in the preparation of statutory and non-statutory reports relating to inspections and reviews.
* Contribute to research design, data analysis and interpretation of inspection findings.
* Provide advice to the Inspector of Custodial Services and senior inspection staff on emerging issues and risks.
* Maintain confidentiality and comply with legislative and policy requirements, including the Inspector of Custodial Services Act 2012.
What we're looking for
* Strong understanding of issues impacting Aboriginal people in custody and the ability to provide culturally informed advice in sensitive and complex environments.
* Experience engaging with Aboriginal communities, government agencies and stakeholders, with well-developed communication and relationship-building skills.
* Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and contribute to inspections, research activities and evidence-based reporting.
* Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and operate within legislative frameworks.
Appointments are subject to reference checks. Some roles may also require the following checks/ clearances:
* National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014
* Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012
