About The City Futures Team

The City Futures team sits within the Planning and Place directorate and plays a key role in shaping the municipality's built environment. The team is responsible for delivering high‐quality capital works projects, including public realm improvements, streetscapes, and public spaces that enhance how our community lives, works and connects.

Working collaboratively with urban designers, landscape architects and project managers, City Futures is committed to delivering innovative, sustainable and community‐focused infrastructure outcomes.

About The Role

The Principal Project Engineer provides technical leadership and engineering expertise across City Future's capital works program, with a focus on public realm and infrastructure projects within activity centres and active transport corridors.

The role is responsible for the development and coordination of civil designs, detailed documentation and contract management, ensuring outcomes are compliant, constructable and aligned with Council standards. Working closely with the Project Manager, the Principal Project Engineer provides expert technical advice and oversight throughout planning, design and construction, ensuring risks are identified early and project solutions are achievable and fit for purpose.

Key Responsibilities Include
* Preparing and reviewing civil designs, specifications and technical documentation to ensure best practice outcomes.
* Partnering with Project Managers and Designers to successfully deliver projects across scope, time, cost and quality.
* Managing complex technical issues across project lifecycle, including design optimisation and risk mitigation.
* Overseeing construction activities including site visits, contractor performance and contract administration.
* Providing expert input into procurement, tender evaluation and project methodologies.
* Supporting continuous improvement, mentoring team members and strengthening internal engineering capability.
About You

You are an experienced engineer with strong technical expertise and a passion for delivering high‐quality public infrastructure outcomes. You thrive in complex environments, apply sound engineering judgement, and collaborate effectively within multi‐disciplinary teams.

You Will Bring
* Demonstrated experience in the design, documentation, and delivery of public infrastructure projects
* Strong problem‐solving capability, with the ability to resolve complex design and construction challenges
* Experience in contract management, construction oversight, and delivering high‐quality project outcomes
* The ability to influence stakeholders and provide trusted technical advice across all stages of a project lifecycle
* A strong commitment to safety, risk management, and continuous improvement
The Following Is Also Required
* A tertiary qualification in Engineering (preferably Civil Engineering)
* Professional engineering registration, or progression towards registration in line with the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019
* Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and project management frameworks
