Senior GIS Administrator is a position in the IT GIS team, located under the ICT Operations section in the Information Technology & Data IT & Data Division (ITDD).
ITDD is responsible for the consolidated provision and support of stable and secure IT Systems, applications, and services to all department users across all States and Territories, including our Indian Ocean Territories and Norfolk Island, as well as supporting seven Ministerial offices, six Groups, and coordination with portfolio entities.
The Division provides the digital collaboration and communications tools necessary to connect a geographically dispersed workforce and to optimise hybrid working arrangements. We manage industry and public facing digital systems, deliver desktop services to over 2,200 staff, support over 30 office locations across Australia and oversee the department's cyber security capability.
IT GIS team is comprised of technical staff that provide key technology services to the users of the Geospatial technology across the Department. Senior GIS Administrator is a position that supports the day-to-day management and maintenance of the Department's Geospatial capability, which includes supporting users of desktop mapping and GIS analysis software, managing internal and external-facing GIS portals and administration of their underlying IT infrastructure.
Senior GIS Administrator is responsible for supporting Department's cloud-based (Azure) enterprise GIS stack, provide technical support to users of GIS software across the Department, maintain GIS SaaS solutions, such as ArcGIS Online, and operate GIS systems health monitoring capability (ArcGIS Monitor).
This role combines a variety of duties in the field of IT administration, management cloud-based computing systems, and also requires a solid knowledge of GIS, including a demonstrated experience of designing, deploying and administering complex enterprise GIS systems. Senior GIS Administrator will also liaise with vendors that provide GIS software and services to the department and establish communications with external technical support teams and specialists, if solution to problems raised by internal users cannot be facilitated using in-house skills and resources.
Senior GIS Administrator provides specialist advice on technical matters to management and business users and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the development and publication of new geospatial content, web maps and web mapping applications.
Senior GIS Administrator also contributes to the development and implementation of initiatives, strategies or methodologies relating to technical, policy, IT, operational or service-oriented matters, and the improvement of business processes.
What will you do?
This role is varied and dynamic, but typical duties include:
* Support and maintain Enterprise GIS architecture, including licensing, software upgrades, patching and other aspects of maintenance and administration required in a cloud-hosted Enterprise GIS system
* Develop and maintain close relationships with service delivery partners and external vendors to support effective delivery of maintenance for the department's GIS infrastructure
* Operate the established system monitoring capability that includes ArcGIS Monitor and Azure built-in monitoring tools to ensure ongoing performance of the cloud-hosted GIS capability and work proactively to optimise the GIS platforms and services.
* Work with business areas to facilitate publication and migration of GIS content between environments, including assistance with the IT change management procedures
* Implement industry's best practices and workflows in the field of GIS administration and work proactively to identify functionality gaps in the GIS technology stack
* Establish and maintain working relationships with key stakeholders and users of the Geospatial technology across the Department. Provide users with expert advice in the space of using GIS technology to help them achieve their goals by using the geospatial technology in the most efficient way
* Promote the Geospatial capability across business areas, by providing technical support, training and mentoring to GIS users.
* Undertake environmental analysis and maintain a working knowledge of emerging technologies and how they might be leveraged to support the Department's GIS capability
* Provide in-house GIS technical support services covering a multitude of Desktop and Enterprise GIS software tools, including Esri, FME and QGIS and operate the relevant queues in the Department's ITSM tool
* Support the GIS team's efforts in maintaining highest standards of customer care and technical service provided by IT GIS to the users of the geospatial technology, align work activities with the team's service offer and policies and operational documentation as part of a process and service improvement program
* Contribute to the development and implementation of initiatives, strategies or methodologies relating to technical, policy, IT, operational or service-oriented matters, and the improvement of business processes
* Assist other teams in the ITDD and provide guidance on deployment of GIS software in standard and non-standard operating environments
* Manage the GIS support queue in the IT service management tool and take ownership of GIS-related incidents and service requests submitted by users

* Have demonstrated experience and operational knowledge of the ESRI suite of products, including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS PRO, ArcGIS Online, Survey 123 for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Monitor.
* Be a skilled communicator and have experience conveying complex technical concepts to audiences with variable skill levels
* Have demonstrable experience in configuration, administration and use of ArcGIS Enterprise or comparable enterprise GIS systems
* Have a good technical aptitude over a range of software platforms, databases and tools
* Collaborate across diverse teams, using your exceptional interpersonal and engagement skills to engage with senior leaders and a wide variety of stakeholders, valuing different perspectives, contributions and backgrounds.
* Have experience in administering complex enterprise GIS Systems in a cloud environment
* Demonstrate proactive problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous improvement
* Have experience in managing and operating virtual machines in a cloud environment (Azure)
* Demonstrate high-level organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes
* Be familiar with FME Flow and FME Form software and have experience in configuration and deployment of these tools
