About the Role
The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the delivery of high-quality secondary systems and protection engineering solutions across HR and MV power systems. This role provides technical leadership, ensures compliance with Australian standards and network requirements, and supports project delivery from concept through commissioning.
The position plays a key role in mentoring junior engineers, engaging with clients and stakeholders, and contributing to continuous improvement in engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and deliver secondary systems and protection engineering for HV/MV substations and power system projects.
* Develop and review protection philosophies and schemes.
* Develop and review protection settings and coordination studies
* Develop and review secondary systems designs, schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams
* Develop and review relay configuration files and testing documentation.
* Perform protection coordination studies, fault analysis, and system modelling.
* Provide technical input into FATs, SATs, commissioning, and site support.
* Ensure designs comply with Australian Standards, Network Service Provider standards, and client and regulatory requirements.
* Act as a technical authority for secondary and protection engineering
* Review and approve engineering deliverables prepared by others.
* Provide mentoring and technical guidance to graduate and junior engineers.
* Support the development of engineering standards, templates, and best practices.
* Collaborate with project managers to meet scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
* Interface with clients, utilities, OEMs, and contractors.
* Contribute to technical proposals, tenders, and scope development.
* Support issue resolution during design, construction, and commissioning phases.
* Promote a strong safety culture aligned with WHS obligations
* Ensure quality assurance processes are followed and continuously improved.
* Identify and manage technical risks related to secondary systems and protection.
Key Skills & Experience
* Degree in Electrical Engineering
* 8+ years' experience in secondary and protection engineering.
* Strong experience with HV/MV protection schemes (e.g. line, transformer, feeder, bus, generator protection)
* Proficiency with modern numerical protection relays (e.g. SEL, Siemens, ABB, Schneider or equivalent)
* Demonstrated experience delivering projects within Australian utility or industrial environments.
* Sound knowledge of Australian Standards and NSP requirements.
* Strong technical writing, review, and stakeholder communication skills.
