An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join our Keeper Management team in a Full-Time Fixed-Term capacity as a Senior Zoo Veterinarian for a period of 8 months!

At Australia Zoo, Zoo Veterinarians work closely within the Zoo Vet team and the Wildlife Hospital team to ensure the daily operations of Australia Zoo Animal Care are maintained to a gold standard of care.
Veterinarians must be able to function in a dynamic environment with constantly changing priorities consistent with emergency work. Animal welfare is a priority and responsibility for personal safety when working with wild animals is critical. Customer service is an important part of the position with a need to communicate positively with the public, the media, VIPs and other staff to promote conservation and education.
Duties May Include:
Maintaining the highest standard of animal welfare
Veterinary care of animals requiring treatment
Compliance with all relevant legislation including the Nature Conservation Act, the Animal Welfare Act, COP for Wildlife in QLD and Queensland Health Regulations
Carry out post mortem examination when required
Supervising the Zoo Vet Nurse
Answering email and phone enquiries concerning veterinary subjects
Keep up to date with all areas of veterinary medicine and care, including maintaining continuous education
Commitment to Australia Zoo Group policies and procedures
Ensure company ethics and professional standards are adhered to at all times
Maintain Australia Zoo’s customer service standards
Adhere to all Health and Safety Procedures
Attend meetings as requested by Senior Management
Other duties as requested by Curators, General Manager, Zoo Director or Owners
Essential Criteria:
A Degree in Veterinary Science registerable in Queensland
A minimum of 5 years’ experience practicing animal medicine in a Zoological Facility
Have or be eligible to obtain a licence to use radiation sources (diagnostic veterinary radiography) from Queensland Health
Have relevant vaccinations for working in the industry (Tetanus, Lyssavirus, QFever) unless otherwise exempt
Good knowledge of emergency medicine principles, ultrasonography and surgical procedures and a methodical and sound diagnostic approach
A high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and communicate effectively and positively with all staff and zoo visitors
Self-motivation, initiative and the ability to work as part of a team
Excellent problem-solving skills and evidence-based decision making
Computer literacy including the Microsoft suite (Excel, Word and Power Point)
Well developed organisational and time management skills & the ability to handle multiple tasks
Flexibility with days/hours of work (including weekends, public holidays and school holidays)
Excellent presentation
Open driver’s licence
