Build the foundation of every great day on the mountain
Snowmaking is where winter begins. As a Snowmaker, you'll be part of the team responsible for creating and maintaining the snow that brings our mountains to life. Working behind the scenes — often at night and in challenging alpine conditions — you'll combine technical skill, teamwork, and resilience to deliver high-quality snow and set the stage for an unforgettable guest experience.
This role typically commences in May, allowing you to be fully trained and ready ahead of the season opening. You'll work with a blend of state-of-the-art automated snowmaking systems and manually operated snow guns, adapting to weather conditions and terrain requirements to help shape the season from the ground up.
Snowmaking is a physically demanding and highly rewarding role. When snowmaking operations wind down, there may be opportunities to transition into other mountain departments to support the business for the remainder of the winter season.
Your Role on the Mountain
* Operate and monitor automated and manual snowmaking systems to produce high-quality snow in changing weather conditions
* Adjust equipment settings based on temperature, wind, and humidity to optimise snow production and efficiency
* Move, position, and maintain snowmaking equipment across alpine terrain, including hoses, snow guns, and infrastructure
* Conduct routine inspections, de-icing, and basic maintenance; identify faults and elevate safety or mechanical issues
* Operate snowmobiles, vehicles, and equipment to access work areas and transport materials
* Work collaboratively with Grooming, Lift Operations, and other mountain teams to support terrain readiness
* Follow all safety procedures and maintain safe work zones in a high-risk, overnight operating environment
What You'll Need to Succeed
* Availability to work overnight shifts, weekends, and public holidays throughout the season
* High level of physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in cold, icy, and variable alpine conditions
* Strong safety awareness and the ability to follow procedures in physically demanding and high-risk environments
* A current unrestricted driver's licence (manual vehicle capability advantageous)
* Mechanical aptitude and a practical, hands‐on approach to equipment and problem solving
* Reliability, resilience, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a close-knit team
Advantageous experience (not essential):
* Previous snowmaking, alpine, or outdoor operations experience
* Trade or industrial background, working at heights, First Aid, or emergency response training
What's In It for You
* A key role in shaping the ski season from the very beginning
* Comprehensive training in snowmaking systems and mountain operations
* Potential opportunities to work across other departments later in the season
* A Vail Resorts Australia Staff Lift Pass and up to 40% off food, retail, and rentals
* Access to staff programs, events, and wellness initiatives
* The chance to work with a close-knit team in a unique alpine environment
