About the Role
Our client is seeking a skilled and motivated
System Administrator
to manage the secure operation of a Windows-based private cloud network consisting of virtual machines (VMs).
This hands-on technical role is ideal for someone with solid experience in Windows system administration and a strong interest in expanding their expertise in cybersecurity and secure network operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting daily system operations, monitoring system performance and security, and helping to ensure compliance with Australian Government security requirements—particularly the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Information Security Manual (ISM).
Key Responsibilities
Perform general administration and maintenance of Windows Server virtual machines (VMs)
Apply system patches, updates, and security hardening in line with best practices
Monitor and manage system performance, including logs, disk space, and CPU usage
Conduct vulnerability scans using tools such as Microsoft Defender
Support and enhance event logging, SIEM tools, and log review processes
Administer and troubleshoot SQL Server (including backups and restorations) and IIS web servers
Contribute to business continuity and disaster recovery planning (BCDRP), including regular testing of plans
Respond to security incidents and assist with incident response efforts
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation including: System policies and procedures, Security Risk Management Plans (SRMPs), Risk and asset registers
Support for network penetration testing preparations
Manage a security calendar to coordinate compliance reviews, security meetings, and audits
Required skills and experience
Proven experience in administering Windows Server within a virtualized environment
Interest in or familiarity with Australian Government security standards (e.g. ASD ISM)
Strong understanding of secure system configuration and hardening best practices
Proficient in managing virtual machines and using VM management tools
Experience with vulnerability management and system monitoring tools
Working knowledge of SQL Server and IIS is advantageous
Excellent written communication and documentation skills
Ability to prioritise tasks, work independently, and effectively contribute to a small, focused team
Security clearance
Must be an Australian Citizen or hold a Baseline (or above) security clearance.
