About The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our dynamic and well-established Cytology Laboratory on a permanent full-time basis. This role offers the opportunity to be a part of a statewide network of laboratories across New South Wales, supporting improved health outcomes for our patients.
The Cytology sector is within the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology, located at the ICPMR Westmead Hospital as part of the NSW Health Pathology network.
Cytology consists of a team of caring and dedicated technical, scientific and medical staff all working together to provide speciality diagnostic cytology services so that clinicians can care for their patients and make the best possible treatment decisions for patients.

What You'll Be Doing
Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the reporting of non-gynaecological and gynaecological specimens based on service needs, fine needle aspiration attendance for the provision of rapid on-site evaluation of sample for adequacy and triage, specimen processing, participation in training, education and competency activities and a range of quality management practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution and Certificate of Cytotechnology of the Australian Society of Cytology (CTASC).
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a routine diagnostic Cytology Laboratory with skills in reporting non-gynaecological and gynaecological specimens, fine needle aspiration procedures, use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems, and proficiency in programs like Microsoft Office.
Willingness to participate in specimen preparation, fine needle aspiration attendance on and off site, out of hours coverage, case discussion, training, quality assurance activities, and continuing education programs.
Customer-focused approach with well-developed interpersonal skills, effective communication with customers, patients, and staff, report writing, and data analysis skills.
Ability to work responsibly and efficiently, managing competing priorities to meet deadlines.
Ability to work both independently and in a team, contributing to diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory.
Display initiative, problem-solving and analytical skills, with the capacity to investigate and resolve complex issues.
Understanding of legislation, policies, and safety requirements impacting the laboratory environment, including work health and safety and privacy laws.
