Statewide Paediatric Training Program BASIC TRAINEE 2027
* Australia, Tas
* May 5, 2026

Paediatric training in Tasmania offers a wealth of paediatric specialty and sub‐specialty experiences within a supportive and expanding team. The statewide training programme provides broad exposure to general paediatrics and subspecialities under close consultant supervision. Positions are available for first‐year trainees, those seeking paediatric experience for other training programmes, and more experienced trainees preparing for college exams.

We are very proud to offer paediatric basic trainees the opportunity to meet all their training requirements to complete Basic Training within 3 years with rotations in general paediatrics, emergency paediatric medicine, paediatric subspecialities, rural rotations within Tasmania and negotiated positions with interstate tertiary hospitals. These positions are accredited by the RACP for basic training in General Paediatrics. LGH and NWRH are both accredited for rural training when on rotation from Hobart.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the major paediatric and neonatal referral service and the major university teaching hospital for Tasmania. It has a 32‐bed paediatric and adolescent wards, a 12‐bed Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU) and a 16‐bed Special Care Nursery. The Department of Paediatrics is managed by a team of Staff and VMO Specialists in Neonatology, Paediatric Emergency Transport, Paediatric Intensive Care, Paediatric Endocrinology, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Community Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and General Paediatrics.

Launceston General Hospital (LGH) includes a 34‐bed General Paediatric ward, 12‐bed Level‐2 neonatal nursery and paediatric outpatients. North‐west regional hospital (NWRH) in Burnie includes a 12‐bed General Paediatric ward and an 8‐bed neonatal intensive care with 2 special care nursery beds. Each unit is staffed 24 hours a day by registrars and HMO staff with consultant oversight.

The wellbeing of trainees is a top priority. The program aims to provide individualized training pathways, including part‐time and job‐sharing opportunities. College supervisors and mentorship are highly encouraged.

Multiple general paediatric registrar positions are available to both Basic and Advanced trainees. The role primarily involves the care of children through in‐patient care and outpatient services.

Rotations are offered in:

* Inpatient general paediatrics at RHH, LGH and NWRH
* Neonatal & Paediatric Intensive Care at RHH
* Paediatric Emergency at RHH
* Paediatric Outpatients at RHH
* Paediatric Surgery at RHH
* Paediatric sub‐specialty at RHH (Oncology, Respiratory, Neurology)

A successful applicant will be granted a 3‐year position. Rotations will include a combination of the above.

The program has long‐standing relationships with Women's and Children's Hospital Adelaide and the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, offering tertiary training spots in the third year.
