Offer description

Intensivist | Staff Specialist | Permanent positions available totaling 3 FTE, various FTE available subject to negotiation | Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital (SMH) | Applications close: Sunday 5 April 2026

Be part of an exciting ICU expansion.

In July, we will move into a new state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit located on the third floor of the new Acute Services Building, as part of a major hospital redevelopment.

This redevelopment will expand the hospital to more than 400 beds and significantly enhance the range of specialist services available to the community. Key developments include a cardiac diagnostic centre with a dedicated Coronary Care Unit, cardiac ward, and angiography suite, as well as 10 operating theatres, an expanded Emergency Department, and a modern radiology department with MRI capability. Surgical services will be expanding the range of sub-specialties and the complexity of surgery performed. The new facility will also include an acute mental health unit.

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated Intensivists who are keen to play a major role in the continued development of ICU services at Shoalhaven Hospital. You will join an established team comprising two Staff Specialists and nine Visiting Medical Officers, who share the ICU on-call roster.

About the current Intensive Care Unit

The ICU is a CICM Level 2 unit (current Role Delineation Level 4) delivering a level of service compatible with a Level 5 unit, including:

* Long-term ventilation
* Complex haemodynamic support
* Renal replacement therapy
* Paediatric patients, usually >13 yrs, on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the duty Intensivist

The unit is currently accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for Rural and Foundation training. Following the move to the new ICU, our goal is to apply for accreditation for Core Training.

We are therefore seeking candidates who bring the skills, vision, and leadership to support the continued expansion of both clinical services and training opportunities. A strong interest in teaching and education is essential, with active involvement expected in the supervision and training (including simulation) of nursing staff, junior doctors, and transitional fellows.

The Role

The successful applicant will:

* Provide specialist care to patients within the Intensive Care Unit
* Deliver consultation services across the hospital
* Lead the Clinical Emergency Response System (CERS) team
* Contribute to service development, quality improvement and research initiatives
* Possess a high level of commitment to providing care to rural and indigenous communities

A key strategic priority for the unit is the development of critical care ultrasound and echocardiography services, including the establishment of structured education and training programs.

Candidates should therefore demonstrate a strong commitment to developing these services and either hold or be pursuing advanced training in critical care echocardiography and/or ultrasound, consistent with CICM IC-29 guidelines.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking an Intensivist who:

* Provides a high standard of accountable clinical care consistent with the defined scope of practice for ISLHD and NSW Health policies
* Demonstrates a strong team-based approach to patient care
* Works effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical environment
* Is committed to education, service development, and clinical leadership

The ICU operates with a highly integrated multidisciplinary model of care. Patient management is led by the Intensivist, working collaboratively with the admitting consultant team and supported by medical, nursing, and allied health staff to ensure the highest standard of patient care.
