This position sits within the Emergency Department at Alice Springs Hospital to support role of ED staff in the coordinated public health response to the ongoing syphilis outbreak in the Northern Territory, including implementing the Chief Health Officer directive to offer routine syphilis screening to eligible people attending any NTG health service.
The role will build capacity for routine syphilis screening in the ED by supporting nursing staff through education and mentoring around identifying eligible patients, performing syphilis serology and point of care testing (POCT), and treatment of symptomatic presentations.
The successful applicant will report to the Syphilis Incident Management Team (IMT) leads in ED and will work closely with the Syphilis Register Officers, the CDC and Primary Health Care providers.
If capacity exists, the role will offer education and mentoring relating to testing and treatment in the ED for all sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses.
Strong clinical judgement, education skills, stakeholder collaboration, and patient database utilisation are critical to success in this role.
Sexual health nursing experience and/or postgraduate qualifications are desirable.
