Exceptional leader sought for one of Australia's foremost progressive public policy think tanks
Established in 2007, Per Capita is an independent public policy research centre, with a close relationship with the Australian Labor Party, the union movement and the progressive non-profit community.
Per Capita is seeking a dynamic and energetic leader to steer the think tank into its third decade of operations.
The Executive Director will be responsible for:
* Working with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a strategic plan to grow the resource base of the think tank, including through direct fundraising;
* Overseeing research and policy development programmes and publications;
* Increasing the profile and impact of Per Capita's research through media engagement, building the stakeholder base and direct advocacy to policy makers; and
* Curating a series of public events and activities to further the understanding of social democratic policies and solutions to the challenges facing Australia.
The Executive Director will manage the staff of Per Capita, be responsible for the company's budget management and regulatory compliance, represent the think tank publicly, and work with the Board of Directors to ensure Per Capita consolidates and grows its impact.
A high-calibre candidate will have extensive experience in the not-for-profit, public policy or government sectors, with a sound understanding of Australian politics and of social and economic policy. They will demonstrate strong people leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively with partners in the progressive non-profit sector and labour movement.
A proven track record in leading effective policy change, securing income and funding partnerships, high level strategic planning and reporting skills and sound financial and people management skills are critical to success in this role.
The successful candidate will be a bold and original thinker with exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, and confidence speaking in public and in the media.
The role will be considered for placement in Melbourne or in a hybrid remote arrangement, with a competitive remuneration package.
Key Responsibilities:
* Strategic Planning and Implementation: Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with Per Capita's mission to fight inequality in Australia, working closely with the board of directors.
* Financial Management: Oversee the budget and financial health of the organization
* Staff Leadership and Management: Manage and motivate staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment that supports and develops the next generation of progressive policy thinkers.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders, including donors, leader in the labour movements, progressive non-profit advocates, policy makers, researchers, and the public.
* External Representation: Act as a spokesperson for the think tank, representing its work at public events and in media outlets, including writing regular articles and interventions in the political debate.
* Fundraising and Resource Development: Work closely with the board of directors to secure funding and resources to support the think tank's operations and research activities.
* Policy Influence: Engage in policy advocacy, promoting Per Capita's research findings and policy recommendations to high-level decision-makers at all levels of government.
* Program Development: Oversee the development and implementation of research programs and policy development projects.
About You:
* Extensive experience in the non-profit, public policy, or government sectors.
* Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff.
* Demonstrated fundraising ability, including strong funding networks.
* Proven track record in strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to act as a spokesperson for Per Capita in the national media.
* Experience in policy advocacy and research utilization.
* Strongly self-motivated, able to work independently, under pressure, and with often demanding timelines.
